Host a Grilled Pizza Party

I love to entertain around the grill. My guests and I enjoy spending time outside relaxing and cooking together around a fire—and what better way to enjoy each other’s company?


I’m also a big believer in the idea that you can cook just about anything on the grill, and specialize in sharing some of those delicious possibilities. So, if you’re planning a grilling get-together and find yourself with the same burgers and hot dogs on your shopping list, why not rethink the menu? Why not think—yes—I can make pizza on the grill!


Pizza is a versatile canvas for a wide variety of flavors. It can be light or hearty. It can satisfy vegetarians and carnivores alike. And pizza crust is the perfect base for exploring flavors from around the world.


Here’s your pizza grilling party game plan:


Step One: Write a shopping list. Plan on one to two mini pizzas per person, with plenty of topping choices. Make the ingredients for several kinds of pizza ahead of time, such as chicken, shrimp and bacon for BBQ Chicken, Thai Shrimp, Mexican, or BLT and Avocado pizzas. Place the toppings for each pizza in small dishes on a tray or cutting board so they’re all close at hand. My favorite finishing touch is a delicious slice of cheese. I like to use Land O Lakes ® Deli American and 4 Cheese Italian Blend—both have a great creamy flavor and melt perfectly on pizzas.


Step Two: Roll the dough. Make the pizza dough the night before or buy thin-crust pizza dough. Portion out the dough for mini pizzas and let them rest at room temperature on a board dusted with flour or cornmeal.


Step Three: Prep the grill . The secret to grilled pizza success is a clean, well-oiled grate. Cleaning your grill is a must to prevent fires and keep food from sticking or picking up off flavors.


Step Four: Create heat zones. When cooking on a charcoal grill, create direct and indirect heat zones by moving the charcoal to one side of the grill (direct = cooking directly over the charcoal, indirect = cooking on void side). Once charcoal has ashed over, cook pizza on indirect heat according to recipe directions.


Step Five: Still hungry? Feed big appetites with a tasty dessert. One of my favorites is the Dessert Grilled Cheese sandwich. It’s always a crowd pleaser!


And that’s really all it takes! Well, that, a few good friends, and a sense of grilling adventure.
