What does your kitchen smell like during the holidays? Peppermint? Gingerbread? Eggnog? Pumpkin pie spices? If you’re like me, the answer is, “All of the above.”


For many of us, this is the best time of year for baking. At the Land O’Lakes Test Kitchen, we receive countless emails, tweets, and phone calls with all sorts of holiday baking and cooking questions. This year, we’re planning the ultimate, virtual holiday party to get all of your questions answered and share baking tips and holiday recipes — including some beautiful, gift-worthy foods you’ll want to wrap up for everyone on your list.


I may be biased, but I think giving baked goods can be the perfect holiday gift. Who doesn’t enjoy eating and sharing delicious homemade treats?


This year at the Test Kitchen, we focused on creating recipes you can give as gifts to your family, friends and neighbors in our Holiday Recipe Brochure called Wrap Up the Holidays. These recipes are easy to make, easy to store and easy to travel with. Of course, we’ve included recipes for entertaining, too. You can download all of our new recipes in this year’s Holiday Brochure here


We’re also planning a Twitter party! During this online get-together, called #CookieChatter, we’ll share cookie and holiday recipes and tips for wrapping up the holidays. Ree Drummond, the one and only Pioneer Woman, will be my cohost. And we’re excited to welcome our special guests, bloggers Sommer, Julie, Brenda and Maria. The Twitter party is a great opportunity to ask your favorite bloggers for their holiday recipes and tips.

Log into Twitter on Wednesday, December 4 from 8 to 9 p.m. EST.

  • Search for the hashtag #CookieChatter.
  • Join in the conversation! Include #CookieChatter in your tweets so other people can see them, too.
  • Keep an eye out for tweets from special guests @TheLittleKitchn, @TwoPeasandPod, @FarmgirlsDabble and @SpicyPerspectiv.

My house smells like cookies of all kinds. Last week I baked 33 dozen for my church's bake sale fund raiser. It was a 2 day project. Now this week and next week I will be baking for my family. I have 3 adult children, One a single dad with 2 sons, ages 9 and 12, a single son, who loves his Mom's cookies and a daughter with 3 1/2 year old twins and an 8 month old. I love to bake so this time a year is fun for me. The twins will "help" decorate the cutout cookies this year. What fun that will be

I love making chocolate chip cookies with out the chocolate chips! You see I got sick on them when I was 5. (1975) and have traded out for those nasty chips ever since. I have exchanged butterscotch, mint chips, dried fruits. but the best is dried cranberries, white choc chips and pecans! So wonderful!

I love Ree and her show the Pioneer Woman! When I watch her show - I dream of being the Ranch "mom" - I woud love that life.
I'm sorry I missed this twitter talk! I was helping my son with his homework. I was late getting out of work and picking up my son. So it was a quick leftover night and then homework.
I love land o lakes butter! Your unsalted butter is the only butter I use when I bake. I'm on a very tight budget, living paycheck to paycheck. So baking is what I do for my Christmas gifts, some might think it's a small thing to give but I feel with top notch ingredients like Land o Lakes butter - I'm giving out a gift like from a high end "mall" store, and then when they taste the layers of "yummy goodness" I know their happy!

Why do you have to use unsalted butter in some of the cookie recipes - can I use salted if that is all I have?

When baking cookies you can use either salted or unsalted butter - either will work just fine. Chefs and spokespeople like Ree have favorite butter types they use but either will work well in cookie baking.

This year I made my favorite Land O Lakes caramel recipe, Aunt Emily's Soft Caramels. It is easy to make and so wonderful in flavor. Make sure you only cook the mixture to 242 - 244 degrees and not higher since the candy mixture will get hard at a higher temp.

I love baking sugar cookies but can never roll the dough even enough for them to be uniform so they bake at the same time? How can I make this happen for them to be uniform and how thick should you roll your dough? Thank you ladies :)

I suggest you follow the recipe instructions about how thick to roll your cookies. Some are rolled very thin, about 1/8", and others are rolled a more typical thickness, about 1/4". I actually use a ruler and measure the thickness of the dough in several places around the dough. I have found I need to do that since it is easy to push too hard when rolling which results in thinner dough. Happy baking!

I'm so excited! I love your show, your cookbooks, and your whole way of being! You inspire me. I make homemade cookies every year for all of the people who touch our lives. Everyone from our doctor, to the garbage men, to the hairdresser gets a tin of cookies! I still use my ten dollar mixer I've had for ten years! I've always dreamed of having a Kitchen Aid mixer of my very own! Imagine the possibilities! Cannot wait for # Cookiechatter!

How long will iced sugar cookies stay fresh? Should they be stored in air tight container in the pantry. Would like to make for gifts.

If the iced cookies are at room temp. or are refrigerated they should be just fine to give for about 1 week from when they were baked. For longer storage you could store them in the refrigerator but it is best to store cookies that need to be frozen unfrosted. Then frost the cookies once they are thawed. If frozen like this you could keep them 2-3 months in the freezer.

I'm not on twitter. Guess I'll be sure to watch this special. Land O'Lakes unsalted is the closest to having a real butter taste. Beats churning and making your own. ;) Hope you are giving ideas for decorating gingerbread boys and girls plus yummy candy. Diabetic candy would be good too. Pioneer Woman hits home with me. Watch Ree when I'm not working and of course, there's always the DVR!
