New Year’s Resolutions from the Test Kitchen: Entertain More and Worry Less

A new year is a chance to make some changes—big or small—in the kitchen. Think new flavors, new techniques, new ways of organizing your cooking. Think less stress and more time enjoying your family and your guests. Our Test Kitchen experts are looking forward to a great new year and have some tips for making 2013 a great year for you, too.

Becky's Resolution: To entertain more and worry less

Becky has a big change to look forward to in 2013: a new house with a new kitchen she designed herself. As Director of the Test Kitchen, she has some strong opinions about what goes into an ideal kitchen. But, instead of high-end specialty equipment, Becky went for lots of counter space and an open, welcoming layout.

“It’s the perfect house for having friends over and for sharing great food,” Becky says. “My mantra is going to be entertaining more often but with less worry. I want to invite people over to just enjoy their company and not worry about making the perfect seven-course meal or pulling out my good china.”

Guests naturally gather in the kitchen, and when someone offers to help—as they usually do—Becky plans to put them to work. Guests can toss salads, prep vegetables, set out appetizers or lend a hand in so many other ways. A homemade pizza party, she says, is a fun, low-stress way to get everyone involved in the kitchen.

“You don’t have to do it all yourself,” she says. “You can ask for help. My generation isn’t very good at asking. We want to stay in control. But I’m letting go of that!”

Guests can help assemble this pretty antipasto platter or toss this fresh salad with blue cheese, dried cranberries and candied almonds.

What’s your 2013 kitchen resolution?
