Spice Up Your Life With Chai

A couple of years ago, my parents traveled to Chennai, India as part of a volunteer program. While visiting, they were introduced to many new things and aspects of Indian culture – from the generosity of the Indian people to their death-defying approach to traffic. But the most recurring theme? “Chai.”

Every family has its traditional favorites for Thanksgiving dinner. Still, there is always room in the menu for a few surprises to keep the meal interesting and maybe even start a new tradition.

Our Pistachio-Sprinkled Green Beans or Orange Glazed Sweet Potatoes are simple dishes that add a touch of elegance to the table. For dessert, bake a deliciously rich Chocolate-Laced Pecan Pie that combines a classic pecan pie recipe with chocolate chips for irresistible results.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Pumpkin: That's How We Roll!

by Liz November 15, 2010
Pumpkin: That's How We Roll!

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and visions of pumpkins are swirling around in my head. Questions, really … Should I make a classic pumpkin pie for this year’s feast or something new and exciting? When I found the recipe for Pumpkin Cake Roll, I decided on the latter.

A traditional Thanksgiving dinner would simply not be complete without dressing! Turkey dressing, also called stuffing, can be made with different breads, spices and fruits, but all should complement the subtle flavor of roasted turkey.

Our Bread Sage Stuffing is simply the classic recipe for a buttery breaded dressing, chock-full of onions, celery and spices. Spiced Fruit & Bread Stuffing is a bit more lively, with mixed dried fruit that adds a touch of elegance plus a sweetness that pairs well with poultry. Another twist on the traditional, Cornbread Stuffing is rich with bacon and makes a colorful addition to your holiday table. No matter which recipe you choose, you're sure to find something delicious for your guests and give your meal good old-fashioned flavor.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, I must admit we all chuckled at first, but ended up emphatically and unanimously in agreement that a double crust pumpkin pie was just fine! Why not? Maybe it holds some special kind of magic that might work for other marriages, too? Sixty-five years is quite an accomplishment!

Here are a couple other non-traditional pumpkin pie recipes you might want to try this Thanksgiving season such as Pumpkin Squares or Maple Pecan Pumpkin Pie. Or, try our Classic Pumpkin Pie. You could even add a top crust, just for fun!

A Bring-Along Breakfast

A Bring-Along Breakfast

Weekend get-aways are so fun, aren’t they? I love the chance to have a change of scenery before going back to my next week of work. Lucky for us, we recently we got to do a really fun cabin weekend with some of our closest friends! In celebration of our good friend Jeff’s golden birthday, five of us couples headed up for a weekend away – to relax and, of course, eat.

Final Farewell To Grilling

by Liz November 04, 2010
Final Farewell To Grilling

Alas, it’s true, for most of us in Minnesota we just can’t grill year round. My husband claims it’s possible, but somehow we never get around to shoveling a path through the snow to the grill. It’s just too cozy inside by the stove. So, to celebrate our final grilling weekend, we invited a few friends over and made a Brined Chipotle Orange Turkey Breast.

What a wonderful surprise it will be to receive your special package! Bars, drop cookies and candies all travel well, and are your best bet to ensure your heartfelt message arrives in all its splendor.

Holiday Candy Cookie Bites in festive holiday mini-muffin papers are sure to be welcome. Black Forest Oatmeal Drops combine chocolate and cherries for a chewy, delicious treat. Peanut Butter Cookie Fudge is an interesting twist on an all-time favorite candy. Send two or three varieties for an instant holiday cookie tray. Check our link on shipping cookies and homemade treats for helpful tips and a list of other treats well-suited to shipping.

You could also include a holiday letter with a picture of you with all your goodies before they're packaged -- a fun way to remind them of the care and love inside their box!

Happy Baking!

How To Roast A Pumpkin And Why In The World Would You Want To?

Home grown pumpkin is the “norm” for me. Remember my dad the city farmer? He always grows pumpkins in his backyard garden. Some years he plants them in my garden too. So, I grew up eating fresh pumpkin in all my mom’s homemade fall treats like pumpkin bread, pumpkin bars, pumpkin pie, etc. Frankly, I didn’t even know pumpkin could be purchased in a can until I was nearly an adult.

Try these three make-ahead recipes and start your Thanksgiving Day feeling thankful for more time with your guests. They'll rave about the French Herbed Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes, a Savory Broccoli-Corn Casserole, and Sweet Potatoes with Sugared Pecans. Just bake a turkey or ham, get some help (see below!), and enjoy yourself.

Friends and family love to contribute. Someone could bring rolls or bread, and a guest who loves to bake could bring pumpkin pies or another dessert. Grandma could bring her famous cranberry sauce, or a relish tray with olives and an assortment of pickled vegetables. Everyone will be thankful for the abundant feast.

Enjoy your holiday!
