Cherries Jubilee- A Dessert Fit For A Queen (or King)

New Years is just around the corner, and I’m planning on having a small get-together with some friends and family. Of course, dessert is my favorite part of the meal and is usually the “show-stopper” of my dinners. I’ve made a lot of cakes, cookies and bars lately, and want to serve something a little more…exciting. Something that would impress and entertain my guests.

A Great Tart to Start the New Year Right

This year, we’re celebrating New Year’s Eve at home with family. No noisy crowds, expensive drinks and glittery outfits. Instead, we’ll play cards and games to win “white elephant” gifts, listen to holiday music, and maybe watch a classic movie like It’s a Wonderful Life or a Hitchcock thriller. We also love good food and everyone brings something festive and delicious to share. This year, I plan to make a Blue Cheese Appetizer Tart. Colorful, elegant, and distinctive – seems like a great way to start the new year!

A Holiday Tradition: Cinnamon Spiced Yeast Bread Called Pawmaw’s Coffee Cake

There are a number of traditions in my family, but one is close to sacred. That tradition involves a special yeast bread or coffee cake made originally by my grandmother and now made by my mother. This coffee cake is served at our casual family Christmas Eve supper. Then, the leftovers are served the next morning for Christmas breakfast. The only name we have ever used for this special pull-apart type bread is Pawmaw’s Coffee Cake.

A Homemade Holiday- Who Can Resist Caramel Popcorn?

So…do you have all of your Christmas shopping done yet? This is the question that keeps haunting me. Everyone has been asking me this with the holiday drawing near and quite frankly, no I don’t! I mean, I have the main gifts purchased- for my mom, dad, sister and the fiancé…but there are a lot of people that I want to give a little something to, but I have no idea what to get them.

Festive doesn't need to be fussy. The three fabulous and easily portable recipes mentioned here can each be prepared in 20 minutes or less! Sometimes it's simply the ingredients—like colorful pimiento or spinach-flavored tortillas—that make an appetizer festive. Fiesta Pinwheels are a perfect example. Sometimes it's flavor combinations—like mixing different cheeses to create complexity with little effort, such as in Creamy Blue Cheese Spread.

Add to the cheer by showcasing your appetizers on holiday serving ware—a snowman plate for finger foods, a red ramekin for dip, or perhaps a candy cane bowl for chips, such as Seasoned Butter Pita Chips. Tuck a thank you note under your holiday dish and leave it behind as a surprise hostess gift.

Happy Holidays!

The Perfect Holiday Gift: Best Ever Butter Toffee

I enjoy giving food gifts during the holidays. Every year I deliver at least four, and sometimes more, platters of homemade cookies and sweet breads to friends and neighbors. I also like to make goodie bags of sweet treats to put in the stockings of the male members of my family. Sometimes I make caramelized nuts, a sweet snack mix, or candy. Yes, we still hang stockings for everyone at my parents’ home – even the adults.

I love progressive dinners! It's so fun to go from house to house for different courses of the meal. And, it's easy to make something fantastic when you focus on just one part of the dinner.

If you're hosting the appetizer part of the meal, try something savory, like Smoked Salmon Cheesecake. As a host house for the main dish, make something easy to serve to a group -- like irresistible Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff or perhaps a lasagna. Dessert can be something decadent and festive for the holidays. Everyone will love our Ultimate Turtle Dessert.

Try one of these great recipes, and pass the others around to neighbors looking for ideas. You'll have something delicious to rave about every step of the way through dinner.

Enjoy your holiday!

We are happy to report to you, Robin, that we do have such things in our recipe collection! And we think your idea to get some desserts into the freezer is brilliant.

You can’t go wrong with festive Candy Cane Dessert Squares – a pink peppermint dessert lined with rich chocolate ganache that is delicious frozen or refrigerated, and certain to get rave reviews. Or, bake and freeze some lovely Pecan Tarts with Orange Cream, and simply add the orange whipped cream when you thaw and serve. Pound cakes also freeze well – Cranberry Walnut Maple Pound Cake baked in two loaf pans is a nice holiday choice. Wrap your cooled loaves in plastic food wrap and then in foil. Add the drizzle after thawing for a moist, irresistible treat!

Happy Holidays!

What's In A Name? Bread Pudding Deserves A Chance.

Bread pudding is totally new territory for me. I’m told that many people enjoy this dessert during the holidays or as a special treat, but I was skeptical and never felt inclined to try it out. Honestly, “bread pudding”? Who named this stuff? I’m not much of a pudding fan to begin with, so I definitely don’t want bread thrown in there.

Teachers truly appreciate the effort it takes to create homemade treats, so make them smile and surprise them with something just a little different this holiday season.

Bite-size Cappuccino Caramels are chewy indulgence with a touch of coffee. Toffee Cardamom Nuts spice up a seasonal favorite. Or give them their own special project with Triple Chocolate Fudge Brownie Mix. Package your treats in a festive bag, add a bow and a tiny tag — in your best handwriting, of course!

On the 6th Day of Christmas My True Love Sent to Me, Six Geese A-Laying (or Mexican Sunrise Scrambled Eggs)

Traditions are held closely in the Wahlund household. For my older son, Ryan, traditions are especially important. So when my boys were young I started the tradition of celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas. Now I know the 12 days are supposed to be from Christmas day through January 5, but we celebrated the 12 days leading up to the 25th of December. This tradition became a fun way to count down the days to that special holiday they seem to be waiting for all year. Using the song, The 12 Days of Christmas, I would do something special for the boys each day that somehow aligned with the lyrics. Sometimes it was a small toy, gift or tree ornament waiting for them at the dinner table, but most often the something special was tied to food.

Parties can be great fun, but it is so easy to get caught up in the work and miss out on the festivities. Set out these three satisfying make-ahead items for your buffet and you'll be astounded at how the party simply happens around you.

Your guests will love the creamy vegetables and crunchy-topped chicken in Ranch Chicken & Rice Bake, along with a nice crisp Caesar-Style Salad and Individual Coconut Pound Cakes for dessert.

You'll love every minute of the fun! Grab a glass of punch and join the crowd of spectators admiring all the fabulous cookie creations.

Enjoy your party!
