A steaming, cheesy bowl of French Onion Soup is the perfect antidote to a fall chill. Another harvest-time favorite is Hearty Minestrone Soup — a satisfying beef soup loaded with veggies. Or try an elegant Yellow Squash Soup with Cilantro Sour Cream, you won't believe a cream soup can be this simple to make.

Savor any of these delectable soups with crusty bread inside a cozy kitchen.

Orchard Season and Caramel Apple Cupcakes

Growing up, my mom took my three siblings and me to the apple orchard each fall. It was a special thing to look forward to after the school day, and made for its own September adventure. I can still picture all of us – lined up in our red plaid school uniforms, studying the vintage apple-picking machinery displayed in the building. The smell of apple pies hung in the air.

The simple sweetness of squash topped with melted butter is hard to beat. Still, when squash is plentiful in the fall, it's fun to get creative and try new recipes.

Try it stuffed and baked in Acorn Squash with Savory Pork, in a creamy Earth Risotto, or in a hearty Vegetable Garbanzo Stew with Couscous. However prepared, squash is a versatile veggie that truly satisfies.

Enjoy!

Homemade Applesauce

Homemade Applesauce

September is the season of apples. Whether you “give an apple to the teacher” or you “eat an apple a day to keep the doctor away”, there is no better way to enjoy the season than with apples. The crunch of this season’s favorite apple is worth savoring, of course. But why not cook some apples and make fresh applesauce?

With two boys who love playing fall sports, I always look forward to their many football and soccer games. It's fun to make a party of all the anticipation and excitement before and after the events, and there's just something all-American about tailgating!

Try these three winning recipes that are easy to make ahead all are portable and perfect for tailgating. Everyone loves the crunch of a homemade Sweet & Savory Snack Mix, and no one can resist the homespun goodness of cream-cheese Frosted Apple Cinnamon Bars. Score big points with the kids by making Cookie & Candy Topped Cupcakes.

Enjoy the season!

The Right Margarine Matters

by Mallory September 01, 2011
The Right Margarine Matters

Nothing is more frustrating than putting time and effort into baking, only to have the recipe fail. Sometimes cookies spread too much or not enough, they may be burned on the bottom, but raw in the center. There are many common reasons cookies fail, but the truth is, it’s not you, it’s often the margarine or spread you use.
