Give Your Meal an Asian Infusion With Teriyaki Pot Stickers

One of my very favorite Asian-inspired appetizers are pot stickers. They are awesome little Chinese dumplings filled with meat and vegetables – perfect when dipped in soy or chili sauce. Yum! And one of the things that I like about them is that they have a noodle-like texture as opposed to a deep-fried egg roll. They are a great way to start (or complete) a meal. However, I had really only considered them to be an “eating out” treat – how could I possibly make something like that at home?! I wouldn’t know where to begin. What are the outsides made of? And what are they stuffed with? Plus, it would be a huge bummer to set out to make my favorite Chinese appetizer, only -to create something that doesn’t look or taste like a pot sticker.

But then I learned some great news: Land O’Lakes recently developed a simple recipe for Teriyaki Pot Stickers using their new Teriyaki Sauté Express®Meal Starter Squares! With just six ingredients on the list, I felt empowered to tackle my first batch of pot stickers.

First things first. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the ground pork, coleslaw mix and green onions.

Melt one Teriyaki Sauté Express® square in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add the pork mixture and cook it until it’s no longer pink. Use a spatula to keep the meat moving so that teriyaki flavoring coats everything (and nothing burns). This should only take 3-4 minutes.

When the pork is no longer pink, remove the skillet from the heat. Allow to cool for five minutes.

Meanwhile, line up a row of pot sticker wrappers. These can be found in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store. They are nearly identical to wonton wraps, but pot sticker wrappers are round instead of square.  Place a rounded teaspoon of pork mixture onto each wrap.

Dip your finger in a bowl of water, then run your finger along the outside edge of each pot sticker wrap.

Fold the pot sticker in half over the filling. The wet edges should help create a seal. Moisten the outer edge of the wrap again, then use your fingers to pinch pleats along that edge to further strengthen the seal.* Repeat this process until you run out of meat or pot sticker wraps – whichever comes first.

*It’s a good idea to place a damp paper towel over the completed ones, so they stay moist as you proceed with making the rest of your pot stickers.

I’ll admit, my confidence wavered at this point. My “pot stickers” looked rather flat. Some of the edges didn’t want to stay sealed. I worried that I might be in for a disappointment. But, have faith in the recipe – stick with it!

Heat your second Teriyaki Sauté Express® square in the same skillet. Place each pot sticker in the pan, with the pleated edge pointing up.

Once bubbles begin to form in the Sauté Express® Meal Starter, add 1/2 cup water to the skillet.

Cover the pan and cook 4-5 minutes or until most of the water has evaporated. This is where the magic happens! That steaming process transforms your “iffy” looking wraps into beautiful dumplings!

Once your pot stickers are thoroughly steamed they will have that great noodle-like texture on the top, with a crispy fried bottom.

Serve your Teriyaki Pot Stickers with a sprinkling of green onions and a side of soy sauce. Then take a moment to congratulate yourself on making restaurant-worthy dumplings right in your own kitchen – at a fraction of the cost!

These Teriyaki Pot Stickers would make a great appetizer for stir-fry night at your house. Pick up a package of Teriyaki Sauté Express® Meal Starter squares the next time you’re at the grocery store so you’ll be armed and ready to make these delicious dumplings!
