Orange you glad I’m telling you about a great grilling recipe?


It’s been all about “knock knock” jokes at our house this week. With two elementary age boys at home, the knock knock jokes just keep coming! The old “orange you glad” joke is partially what led us to the orange teriyaki beef skewers. We were looking for something we could make for dinner that had orange in it.


Orange and teriyaki make a great flavor pairing for kabobs and skewers, and are a combination of flavors that my kids will eat at any meal. Besides…it’s dinner on a stick! I usually have Sauté Express® squares on hand to help with quick and easy meals. When I found these Grilled Orange Teriyaki Beef Skewers, it seemed like the perfect recipe since it didn’t require the time to pre-marinate the meat. Just brush the glaze on and grill! So, if you are short on time and love the taste of a great glaze, this is your summer skewer recipe.


With some simple prep work, dinner is ready to grill and eat at a moment’s notice. I am going to make this one the next time I have company for dinner. All you need to do is cut the onion, pineapple, beef sirloin steak and a red bell pepper into about 1-inch pieces to place on the skewers. While the recipe calls for fresh pineapple, I’ve found that the canned pineapple chunks actually stay on the skewers better while grilling.

The onions are worth the tears for this meal. I prefer red onions for grilling for the flavor, but feel free to use whatever you have. I always forget to look up the ‘”no crying” way to cut onions until I am three slices into the onion and, by that time, my eyes are too watery to read what I should do anyway. So, I just keep going and hope I don’t cut off any fingers! I have gotten a few extra chores out of the boys when they pass through the kitchen and see me crying.


Boys: “Mom? Are you OK?” (They usually look slightly panicked to see me in tears.) “Do you need help with anything?”

Me: “I’m OK. Thanks for asking. Would you mind taking the recycling out?”

Boys: “Sure, Mom!”


To make your skewers, start threading the ingredients onto the skewers. I usually begin and end with an onion or a pepper to help anchor items on the skewer. I can afford to lose an onion or pepper into the grill, but I would be pretty bummed if I lost a piece of pineapple.


We had to switch from regular, straight skewers a couple of years ago because the boys would use them as swords and light sabers after they cooled down from the grill. I found these curvy style skewers that I thought were cool, and the boys won’t touch them because they look too “pretty” to be used as weapons. Score: Boys = 0 Mom =1. Any type of skewer can be used. If you have wooden skewers, just remember to soak them in water before using them on the grill.


To make the glaze for the skewers, zest 1 orange until you have about 1 1/2 teaspoons of orange zest. Watch your fingers when you are using the zester or a fine toothed grater!


Then mix four softened Teriyaki Sauté Express® squares with the freshly grated orange zest. I wish this could be a scratch and sniff type of post – the glaze smells amazing! There are lots of great spices! When you smell the Sauté Express® square, you’ll know what I mean – it smells so good, you’ll know that dinner is going to be great!

Needle bit of glaze for the skewers!

Brush 1/3 of the glaze mixture onto one side of each skewer – be generous!


Place skewers onto the grill, glazed side up. Grill 2-4 minutes until browned.


Turn skewers over and brush the grilled side with glaze. Continue grilling 8-12 minutes, turning often and brushing with glaze, until the meat reaches your doneness preference.


Dinner is READY! Fresh off the grill and ready to go! We love serving these kabobs over a bed of rice or couscous.


For the kids, we place all the ingredients into a bowl for easy eating. You can tell that this is a meal that my kids like to eat. I caught Bryce eating his dinner on the way to join us at the table.This is his reaction when he was told he needed to wait for everyone to start eating.
