Simple Suggestions for Keeping Costs Down:
  1. Before grocery shopping, put together a detailed grocery list of ingredients for your holiday recipes and then stick to the list at the store.

  2. Look for coupons for products you are buying. Check your local newspaper or look online for coupons. Take advantage of sales, especially when purchasing staples that store well, like sugar, flour and baking spices.

  3. Avoid recipes that use unusual ingredients you are unlikely to use again or are expensive. Candied cherries and fruit, exotic chocolates and nuts are interesting ingredients but add expense.

  4. Toast the nuts called for in a recipe. Toasting brings out the flavor and you may be able to reduce the amount of nuts in the recipe. To toast nuts in the oven: Spread nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 350°F, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes.

  5. Decorate cookies with colorful sugars, not the more expensive decorative sprinkles. To make your own colored sugar: place 1/4 cup granulated sugar into a resealable plastic food bag. Add the desired food color, one drop at a time. Seal bag and knead food color into sugar by hand. To eliminate speckles of color in the sugar, continue to knead sugar mixture until color is even.

  6. Store cookies properly so they will taste as good as the day you baked them. Crisp cookies should be stored in a container with a loose lid and soft cookies should be stored in a container with a tight-fitting lid.

  7. Take your time. Careful preparation, baking and creative presentation for trays or gifts make a big difference.
*Cost calculations are determined using national branded ingredients at regular price, not on sale. Cookie ingredients of less than one tablespoon in a recipe are not included. Costs may vary from time to time and also may vary from one area of the U.S. to another. Energy and equipment costs are not factored into the cost.
