Festive Cherry Drops

Cherry cookies with a chocolate drizzle on top.

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup LandO Lakes® Butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 (6-ounce) jar (1/2 cup) maraschino cherries, well drained, chopped


2/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 teaspoons shortening


Heat oven to 350°F.

Combine sugar and butter in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until well mixed. Add flour and baking powder; beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Stir cherries into dough.

Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 9-11 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely.

Place chocolate chips and shortening in bowl. Microwave , stirring occasionally, 30-45 seconds or until melted. Drizzle cooled cookies with melted chocolate. Let stand until chocolate is set.

I made these last year and everyone loved them. If you think they are tasteless, this is what I did: use amaretto liquor instead of vanilla and add a touch more.
IMHO - just not worth the extra work of draining, drying and chopping the cherries plus melting and decorating with the chocolate. All the extra work seems to produce a really plain cookie.
Theses were quite good. I did omit the vanilla, and add the almond. Also, I used the "Red Cherries" (the kind used for Fruit cake), since there wouldn't be any draining/patting dry.
Last, I added 1/2c mini chocolate chips to the batter when the cherries were stirred in, instead of drizzling on top.
I thought these cookies could of used a boost of flavor. When I make them again I will use a teaspoon of almond flavoring instead of the vanilla.
I did make changes to the 2nd batch I made.......I only used 1-1/4 cup flour not 1-1/2 flour, I added almond flavoring with a tad of orange flavoring to perk up the taste. These cookies are simple to make and very pretty with the chopped cherries.....hubby likes them without the chocolate iciing but I did put the chocolate icing on most. Pretty for Christmas giving & I will surely make them again and again! Thank you for the recipe...............
i made this recipe for a party I had and was not pleased at all. I wound up throwing them all away and making a holiday jelly roll instead. The batter tastes like a regular sugar cookie dough with cherries in it. The cherries didn't add anything to the taste. I would have changed it up perhaps and used peppermint pieces or perhaps some of the cherry cordial Hershey kissese to make it festive. But these recipe I would give a 2 thumbs down.
Well...I am going to update my original review today from fair to good. I find them "bland" but my best friend RAVED about these when she got some this past Christmas.....if she loves them then they must be good.....maybe it really was just me huh? Anyway in all fairness I am going to say they are good.
These have become a Christmas tradition.
I made these cookies for Christmas, and they really were festive as the name implied. I used half green marachino cherries and half red, and used white chocolate for the topping. Yum!
