Cherry Almond Blonde Brownies

These cherry almond blonde brownies use dried cherries and chopped almonds to add updated flavors to traditional blonde brownies.

2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup dried cherries, coarsely chopped


2 (1-ounce) squares bittersweet baking chocolate
1 teaspoon shortening


Heat oven to 350°F. 

Combine brown sugar and butter in bowl; beat at medium speed until creamy. Add eggs and almond extract; continue beating until well mixed. Add flour and baking powder; beat at low speed until well mixed. Stir in almonds and cherries.

Press or spread mixture into greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Bake 28-35 minutes or until top is golden brown and center is set. Cool completely. 

Combine chocolate and shortening in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. Drizzle over brownies. Cut into bars.

Recipe Tip

Use melted dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips for a less intense chocolate flavor.

I made a half recipe, using black walnuts since I had about 5# to use up. Added vanilla and cherry extract, too. I forgot the baking powder!!! But based on the texture of the dough, I'm guessing it's going to be somewhat like shortbread. I'll follow up with a comment when they're baked and cooled.
Delicious brownies! I didn't change a thing in the recipe and it turned out great.
Batter is VERY thick, but turns out great. Didn't drizzle on the topping. Brownies are great warm but even better the next day!
Not as moist as traditional chocolate brownies but nice and chewy.
I made two batches of this already, everyone loves them. I also used dark chocolate to drizzle on top. Recipe is a hit and so easy to make.
These were easy to make and really good. I did add 1 cup of white chips to the brownie batter before baking. This is a recipe I will make again and again!
