Halloween Black Cat Chocolate Cookie Recipe

Black Cat Cookies

Chocolate cookies that make a cute, fun Halloween dessert. The candy corn eyes take on a unique look when baked.

2 cups sugar
1 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
1 tablespoon vanilla
3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
Candy corn
Red cinnamon candies


Combine sugar and butter in large bowl; beat at medium speed until well mixed. Add 1 egg at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla; beat until well mixed.

Combine all remaining ingredients except candies in medium bowl. Reduce speed to low; add flour mixture to butter mixture. Beat until well mixed.

Divide dough in half. Shape each half into a ball; flatten to 1/2 inch. Wrap each half in plastic food wrap. Refrigerate until firm (at least 2 hours).

Heat oven to 350°F. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface, one-half at a time (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with 3-inch round cookie cutters. Place onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Using fingers, pinch up ears at top of each circle. Place 2 pieces candy corn onto cookies for eyes and 1 red cinnamon candy for nose. Press tines of fork on each side of cookie below eyes to form whiskers.

Bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are set. Let cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire cooling rack.

Recipe Tip

- Look for different colors and varieties of candy corn to create different colored eyes.

- Line cookie sheets with parchment paper for easier clean up.

I also had some trouble with the dough being hard to pinch and loosing definition during baking. I made the dough a day ahead and refrigerated it over night. I worked in small batches to keep the dough cold and refrigerated each sheet before baking. The ears that were so hard to form flattened and I could barely see the whiskers. Since I was working a sheet at a time, I was able to make the ears bigger. I formed the whiskers right after baking.
They turned our cute (even if the ears are a bit uneven). The flavor is not an intense chocolate, but I thought they were good. I was a bit skeptical about the flavor of the mix of chocolate cookie and candy corn, but I really liked the flavors and textures together. The candy corn melted just a bit at 7 minutes. I used a mini M&M for the nose and the tiny bit of chocolate was perfect addition.
The cookies came out GREAT!!! In my oven I had to bake them 11 minutes. They are a soft cookie make sure they are completely cooled before storing or they will stick together and break.
This recipe turned out really well and was a perfect project for my four and nine year old to make for their Halloween class parties. I made my dough a day ahead and did not have any problems with crumbling dough. I did leave one batch in for an extra minute or so and the candy melted, so be sure not to overcook.
I made these for my son's Halloween dance bake sale. They turned out really cute and they were easy enough that my 4 year old could help me too. The candy corn only melted when I over-baked one batch (oops!), otherwise they turned out moist, chewy, delicious and adorable!
All was fine until I tried to pinch the ears. The dough was so soft and sticky that I ended up with a mutilated mess. So, for the next batch, I just ignored the ears and made the cat face, which obviously made the cookies less cute. I even refrigerated the dough overnight, but it was still not firm enough to pinch the ears.
We make this cookie every year. I actually like the dough, it is easy to work with. Our always come out cute.
I love these cookies and have made them for years for Halloween for the kids. Not only are they cute but the are delicious too! I have never had any problem with them or with the candy corn melting.
Just a thought.....maybe different brands of candy corn have varying amounts of their ingredients that make some melt and others don't.
This was not as easy as it looks, ears were hard to pinch, candy corn melts and once baked, the cat shape all blended together! I made these for my daughter in college
But she will probably just laugh at it. The candy corn eyes were too big also. Such a shame! Cute idea but just didn't turn out well at all!

Make sure the dough is cold before baking it. Cut the cookies out and then place on the cookie sheet. I would then refrigerate the cookie sheet about 15 minutes so as to make sure the butter in the dough is not too soft.

I was really excited to make these adorable cookies, but the project turned into more work than I expected! Pinching the ears is not very easy if you have any nails. My first two batches looked terrible, until my husband came home and he was able to pinch the ears. The candy corn will melt, even on the lowest cooking time - changed to adding candy corn after baking. I used a white chocolate chip for the nose and that was perfect. The dough was okay, but we would have preferred a stronger chocolate taste and chewier cookie texture. Not sure if I'll try this again.....
Should have read the tips first. Where do I start on how awful this was? I started at 9 minutes. Eye's melted, but not badly. Tops were so cracked you lost the cuteness. Also, very hard to remove from the parchment paper. Second sheet-worth, I tried 11 minutes. Eyes melted all the way through the cookie. In forming the ears, the dough was so sticky (after 2 days refrigeration) that I had to dip fingers in powdered sugar to do them. Extra sugar didn't look so good. Same thing with doing whiskers with the fork. I may go make the third sheet now that I've read the tips, but I'm not even sure I'll bother. I just didn't think they tasted that great. I was going to mail these to my son in college, but they aren't worth the postage.

I am sorry that you had problems when making this cookie. I re-tested the cookie yesterday and I baked the cookie 7 minutes. The time range is 7 - 9 minutes . The candy corn and the cinnamon candy nose did not melt in baking. It is important to not bake this cookie too long or it will get hard and crack.

The cookies came out perfect! Had to cook them for 7 min or the candy corn melted.
I really enjoyed trying this recipe. I loved the fact it is primarily made with ingredients I already have on hand at home. It is time consuming to make these but worth the effort. They are adorable, and taste great too! The kids and adults are loving them. The candy corn melted a little on mine but it made their eyes look like they were glowing and kept their shape pretty well. I like the melted texture of the candy corn because it adds to the chewiness of the cookie.
I made these today. So cute and easy.
I used 2 eggs instead of 3, 1 c of baking cocoa instead of 3/4 c, and Reeses Pieces for the eyes with a candy corn for the nose. I've never had any issues with the candies melting all over the cookie. I stick the dough in the fridge in the mixing bowl, and it is fine to use after an hour or so. Also, instead of rolling out and using a cookie cutter, I roll the dough into balls (about 2 TB large), stamp each ball flat with a glass stamped in sugar and then pinch ears. This makes 42 cookies. Delicious!
This is my very favorite thing to make for halloween. My kids love it. Everything worked out perfectly for me - I had no problems rolling it out or with the candy corn melting. I like to bake it at the lower end of the baking time - they taste better when they're softer.
Great Cookie - Delicious- not too sweet. Only problem was corn melted & I did the same thing ann k did - I made indentations & put corn as soon as I took them out of the oven. I had no problem rolling or cutting. They came out exactly like the picture.
We rolled ours a little thicker so the candy corn would not melt. I pinched ears on the top outside of the cookies instead of inside the circle. These were cut and very delicious.
I found these nearly impossible to roll (too soft) in spite of plenty of refrigeration. Ended up rolling balls by hand then flattening between plastic wrap. Should have added candy corn eyes immediately after baking because mine melted and didn't look anything like the picture. With a lot of extra work, most came out looking somewhat like cats, although I had several "chipmunks". Taste was good, but for this recipe appearance was the main motivation. Not worth it, unfortunately.
Candy corn melts in the oven, even if oven is set at a lower temp. and cookies are baked for a shorter period of time. I made indentations in the cookies for the corn before baking and placed the candy corn in the cookies after baking.
I have made this recipe twice and my family and co workers loved it. I even took and batch to my daughter in College. I am even thinking of using the cookie dough and making a pie crurst out of it. I'll let you know how it works.
What a cute tasty idea! ~ ! have a kitchen friendly tip: we tape a large piece of quality non-stick aluminum foil to the table to roll the dough on, clean up is much easier.
