Apple Nut Coffee Cake

This apple coffee cake is perfect for a weekend brunch or for a casual morning gathering with friends over coffee.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 medium (2 cups) cooking apples, peeled, chopped**


1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Land O Lakes® Butter, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon


Heat oven to 350°F.

Combine all cake ingredients except apples in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until smooth. Gently stir in apples. Spread batter into greased 13x9-inch baking pan.

Combine all topping ingredients in bowl; sprinkle over batter.

Bake 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

*Substitute 1 (16-ounce) can peaches, drained, chopped.

Recipe Tip

We recommend using Red Rome, McIntosh or Haralson apples.

Thank goodness for the internet! I had originally gotten this recipe almost 30 years ago and make it every year in the fall for my husband and for work. I lost the recipe but found it here on the Land O Lakes website. You saved the day!
Awesome! My husband said this one is a keeper and I can make it whenever I want again. I may add one more apple next time, but it is delicious with only two.
This is a super easy recipe and it is so moist and delicious. I will definitely make it again and again.
I participate in "First Friday" at my daughter's elementary school, where we bring in treats for the teachers. I tried this recipe and not a crumb was left. It has a wonderful fragrance, moistness and flavor. Definitely going in my recipe box.

Very good, I would put in a little less cinnamon, it was a little strong.
Just made this coffee cake for Sunday breakfast and was delighted with the results. Not overly sweet and with the nice crunch of nuts. This is a keeper.

This coffee cake was so yummy.I add a extra cup of apples and extra teaspoon of cinnamon.
I made half the recipe, in an 8x8 pan, and used a Granny Smith apple and walnuts. I also substituted sucralose/brown sugar blend for the regular brown sugar. Very easy, and very tasty!
I served this at a famiy brunch, and was asked by all the women for the recipe. I am going to make it again. It's very moist, lots of flavor, and definitely a recipe to keep in the file.
