Apple Cobbler

Apple cobbler may become one of your favorite apple desserts once you try this recipe. Serve this old-fashioned crunchy cobbler warm, with a scoop of ice cream.

7 to 8 large (9 cups) tart cooking apples, peeled, cored, sliced 1/4-inch
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, melted
Ice cream, if desired


Heat oven to 350°F.

Place sliced apples in ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish.

Combine 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in bowl; sprinkle over apples.

Combine remaining cinnamon, flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder and salt in bowl; mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apples. Pour melted butter over topping. Bake 45-55 minutes or until lightly browned and apples are tender.

Serve warm with ice cream, if desired.

This is an AWESOME recipe, I think the crust is absolutely astounding and it all comes together so beautifully that its like heaven in every bite.
I used 4 apples and cored them after peeling with a tool that slices them into wedges.
A pinch of sea salt and potassium bicarbonate lowers the sodium and about 3/4 of a cup of sugar (organic brown).
If you add the butter into the recipe as per the cook at the top, it gets great cake like resullts.
Ginger is also good or the ginger tea granules with honey add some bite.
I also added the zest of 1 lemon.

This is a great dessert, good basic recipe just too much sugar.
Good recipe with some adjustments needed. The first time I made it, I mixed the melted butter into the flour mixture by mistake rather than pouring it on top. It was so delicious! The mixture formed a moist cake on top of the Apples. When I made it the second time, I followed the recipe exactly and it was a little too dry and crumbly. Much better the first way! ( I also used 1/2 the amount of sugar)
Too much flour & sugar...I used vanilla for more flavour.
I read the reviews. I listened to them and made 1/2 of the recipe and used brown sugar too. Anyway it was a mess. The top was like a tasteless gingerbread. I feel like I wasted a lot of ingredients and time. I will not use this recipe again.
Great recipe. I scaled it down by using half of the amounts listed in the ingredients and an 8"x8" pan. It is a quick and tasty dessert.
So, I have been cooking for over 45 yrs and this is my NOW favorite Apple Cobbler!! Just the right amount of everything!!! Yum! everyone LOVED IT!!!!!
This apple cobbler was a big hit! We took the advice of others and reduced the sugar in the topping mix to 1 1/4 cups from 2 cups. It was still quite sweet, but sweet in a good way! We also used a mix of apples. The dish was perfect and the house smelled wonderful!
This recipe is very good. It does however, need to have the sugar cut back to half the amount. I would make it again with much less sugar and a little vanilla.
I've never made an apple cobbler before. this was the simplest recipe to make. My whole family loved it. Instead of sugar I used a sugar substitute (half ratio). It turned out beautifully. A+++ in my book !!!!
I just made this and I'm hoping I did it right. First time making it, ever! Bought a small pint of vanilla ice cream special for it lol I hope I love it! I used gala apples and added a little brown sugar and reduced the white sugar. Most importantly though, I hope my hubby likes it. I know my two year old will since he loves sweets.... Just like his daddy lol
I over mixed the topping so it wasn't crumbly-looking, but it still tasted fabulous! I cut the recipe in half and it worked great in a 9" x 9" pan. It might have had a tiny bit too much sugar but I'm not sure if that was my fault or the recipe (I believe I used a 1/3 measuring cup for half of 3/4 which isn't exactly right).
this is really good. I adjust the sugar to 1/3 since I used Connell red and they are sweet. Toppings are crispy, we paired with vanilla ice cream and a chocolate syrup.yum!

I love the topping but I would reduce the sugars in both topping and apple filling by 1/2 for my taste. Everything else is great. I did brown the top on low broil at the end of baking for extra crisp. I will definitely make again with reduced sugars.
I cut the sugar by 1/2 cuenp and put cold butter in the dough rather than melting. Still wonderful
This was the most delicious dessert made out of apples, I used a bag of Michigan apples being the cheapest version at the market, it was easy to make and it turned out fabulous!
Excellent! I used gala apples, which were sweet so I halved the sugar. My husband said it was the best I ever made, and I bake a lot!
We loved this recipe. My teenage grandson ate a heaping bowl. We both thought it was A little sweet. I think next time I'm going to try reducing the sugar in both the apples and crust and see how that turns out. But very very good. Highly recommend!
My boyfriend and I made this and we love it. We added some vanilla and about a fourth of a cup of brown sugar to the topping. After baking it, adding vanilla ice cream and carmel sundae topping made it perfect.

My granddaughter has a ton of food allergies. I'm going to try using coconut flour rather than wheat flour. I'm WAY excited about this recipe. AND, QUITE frankly, I don't use anything but Land O Lakes butter anyway!!!!
I misread the instructions and mixed the butter in with the rest of the flour mixture. It gave it a delicious topping that I think I would prefer over the original recipe. I didn't give it 5 stars because I still felt like the recipe is bland and could use a bit more spice.
i cut the sugar to 1/4 cup for the apples and used brown sugar. But the crust was awful. overwhelmed the fruit. Cobbler should be more fruit than crust. not this one.

Easy and DELICIOUS! Fed it to my mama, sisters, and nephew, and they loved it, too. Being a lifetime apple PIE maker, I gave consideration to the type of apples I used - scale of sweet to tart, as well as their crispness. In the end I used Granny Smith primarily but also mixed in one Gala and one Golden Delicious, which I happened to have on hand. Other VARIATIONS on RECIPE: 1) I cut Granny Smith apple slices in half, so that they were smaller - not necessarily thinner; 2) I reduced sugar, so that I used 1 1/2 cups sugar to 2 cups flour. The reduction in sugar as well as apple choices may address the problem of oversweetness.
i wanted to try somethin different so i decided to try this recipe. It was delicious warm or cold!! I used gala apples which were sweet so i used 1 and a 1!4 cup sugar instead of 2. My husband andI both enjoyed it as well as my friends who want the recipe and ill be making it again real soon!!
I have made this recipe many times now. It is so good and yet so easy! I tweek it a bit to my own taste. I reduce the suger in the apple / cinamon mixture as I used honey crisp apples in stead of a more tart apple. I also add more butter than the recipe calls for. Sorry, but the butter makes the dish! This is so good my bachelor friends beg me to make extra for them when I bake. This time I added walnuts to the apple mixture just cause my husband loves walnuts. In the oven now, so hope it turns out tasty!
Made the topping with 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp baking powder, I egg and no salt. Sprinkled it over the apples, drizzled the melted butter and then sprinkled 1/2 cup of crushed ginger snaps (trader joes) on top. Baked for 50 minutes, it was delicious. Nice and crunchy.
There wasn't anything about this recipe that I liked. Sorry Lank O Lakes this is really bad!
I agree that this is a terrible cobbler. I should have known that it would be sickeningly sweet from the recipe... 2 3/4 cups of sugar! Want a syringe of insulin on the side?

Sorry you were unhappy with this recipe. Typically cobblers, crisps and fruit desserts like this have an almost equal sugar to flour ratio. It will depend on the apples whether they are sweet or mor tart. This recipe also makes a 13x9-inch pan of the dessert and so the ingredient amounts are greater than what we use in the 8x8-inch size.

I followed the recipe and it turned out wonderful. I plan to make this on a regular basis. I put whole pecans on top and it was delicious.

I just finished making this recipe. It was fantastic! I made a full version in which I followed the recipe exactly and decided to put a little vanilla in the crumb mixture for the half version that I made to take to work tomorrow. Easy and delicious.
This recipe was quick, easy, and beautiful. Instead of 2 cups flour I used 1/4 cup coconut flour, 3/4 cup almond flour and the rest ap flour. used a mixture of cortland, macintosh and sweet 16 apples. yummy and made the house smell unbelievable!
Made this using on 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg and no salt. Turned out very good. I didn't read the recipe first. Just thought to much sugar and I don't like to add salt to my desserts. I let my family and friends add the salt if they want too. Ice Cream makes it even better or Frozen Yogurt.
Delish! Followed the recipe to a tee, the only difference was I covered it with foil & baked it for 45 minutes. I then baked it 10 minutes uncovered. Turned out perfectly!
don't know what I did wrong but this was DISGUSTING. I would give it a -5 star. Yuck!

This was really good! I halved the recipe and used Granny Smith apples. Crunchy and sweet and smooth, all in a good way! I recommend this recipe highly!
I enjoyed this recipe. I took the others advice and cut down on the sugar. I would also cut down on the salt amount especially if you use salted butter.

I made this cobbler, by the recipe, the first time and it was delicious. The second time I made it, I cut the sugar by 1/2 and it was still delicious.. It's easy to make and a big hit with my family and will be for a long while.
I made 1/2 of this recipe for just three of us. We ate half of that. I only had sweet apples so I used only 1/4 cup of sugar (brown). I'd probably cut some sugar for the topping, too, because it's pretty sweet. When the child went off to his bath, his Dad and I ate the rest of it. Good thing I didn't make a whole recipe. Suffice to say, I probably won't make it again. You should. Especially the yous who are young, have clear arteries and like to run- a lot. Maybe, if I make it to say 80, someone will make it for me again and I will enjoy it immensely.
I made this for hubs last night and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This was after making his favorite dinner. Needless to say, I have one happy husband!!! This is ... without a doubt ... the best apple cobbler I've ever had!!!!! I did cut the broiler on for about two minutes after the 55 minutes baking time to get it perfectly browned. AMAZING!!!!!
Made this recipe more or less as written. Subs I made: 1/2 white sugar, 1/2 brown sugar. I like the taste of brown sugar. Used King Arthur gluten free flour and Braeburn apples. What a great apple for baking.
The topping was a bit too sweet but the apples came out perfect. I don't know if decreasing the sugar in the topping will make it come out with the same texture. I baked it for 50 minutes, until the apples were bubbling. The top was very crispy and evenly browned.
Will make it again.
I work at a bar and grill, and we have a Thursday lunch crowd of 70 year old men, who sometimes tip maybe a buck but usually they do not. I sometimes make a cream pie, like peanut butter, coconut or banana.... My boss gave me about two grocery bags full of apples so I searched apple recipes.

So happy I did, one guy who never tips me a dollar left a five..and my boss said, "D**n that cobbler was good. One of my co-workers had 3 HUGE bowls, and there was nothing left to bring home. I myself do not eat fruit or pies...but from all the rave reviews and based on the pan with nothing left,, it was AWESOME.

I made a few changes...I cut the sugar almost in half, as most of the guys on Thursdays are diabetic...and I did not want to be responsible for sending them into a diabetic coma...I actually added about half more cinnamon to the crust and about 1 C. melted butter.

This is a good and simple recipe, but WAAAAAY too much sugar. I am planning on making it (or similar) again and will be sure to use less than half the sugar.

This recipe came out great ! The top cooked to a nice, crunchy crust. I made the dish and cooked it the night before serving. Refrigerated overnight. Then reheated the oven to 300 degrees and warmed it for 15 minutes the following morning. Highly recommended.
I think it is a little too sweet so next time I will use less sugar and there WILL be a next time! Everyone loved it with ice cream. And much easier than making apple pie from scratch!
I made this for a company lunch. I wanted something different then choclate, which is what we have all the time. I'm not an oats fan, and have never found a recipe that I liked. This one is great. Easy to make. I didn't have white sugar so I use 1-1/2 cup brown sugar and it turned out perfect. I will make this again and again. My Co-Workers loved it. Warmed it up in the microwave and topped with ice cream. One great recipe!!!

I love apple cobbler but had never tried to make one. I chose this recipe because I had all the ingredients already in my pantry and I always use Land O Lakes stick margarine or butter in all my homemade recipes. I have to say this is the best apple cobbler I have ever had! And I have tried quite a few. I served it with a couple of scoops vanilla ice cream on top of each serving. My kids loved it and my husband raved about how good it was! Awesome recipe and simple to make. Couldn't have been more pleased!
I also cut way back on the suger, about by two thirds, and also used super tart apples, it seems like the simpler something is the better it turns out
I made it with regular sugar and also with Splenda. Tasted great either way!! A sure add on to the favorite desserts menu!
This is a great recipe! I tried it since the ingredients were simple things I had at home. However, definitely cut back on the sugar because you do not need it. Since it was my first time using the recipe I prepared everything like the recipe said then realized I only needed about half the sugar altogether.

Easy, fast and a great dessert for everyone. The second time I forgot to sprinkle sugar/cinnamon mixture on apples so I just added a bit of cinnamon to the topping. Both ways it was sooo very good. Will make this often.
I made this using some apple pie filling that I had made a couple years ago instead of getting the fresh apples and I only made half the topping. I was in too much of a hurry and didn't follow those instructions right. I poured the butter in with the flour / sugar mixture.The topping tasted like a cookie. It was still really good! I'm kinda anxious to try it the correct way. I bet it's great!!
Absolutely delicious , keeps well and taste great even days later. My husband loved it and we are having company this weekend and this is what he chose as dessert. I cut the sugar and flour by one fourth cup and added a little extra cinnamon, yummmmy
Excellent recipe, but I did have to tweak it a bit. I ended up grating my own cinnamon and reduced the volume of it -- highly recommend doing this. Much fresher flavor. I used 9 Granny Smith apples, and did cut the sugar back somewhat. I also added about a 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt to the apples to bring out the flavor. I also increased the amount of the butter to 1 cup, and made sure that the topping was almost covered with butter. Everyone raved! Thanks to all that suggested cutting back the sugar and increasing the butter. Reviews are very helpful!
Apples went over well..... By my "crumbly crust" became a thin sticky batter. I ended up spreading it over the apples. (the night befor thanksgiving the stores are closed so I only get one try). It's baking now, if it turns out bad, I have enough for a second pumpkin pie. But my advice is be careful with the crumbly bits.

This is absolutely the best apple dessert I have ever eaten or made! I just made it for a friend's dinner party and got rave reviews. My husband liked it so much I made a smaller one for us the next day! I did add 1/4 cup chopped walnuts to the topping, and decreased the sugar to 1 1/2 cups, based on other reviews. I will make this recipe again....and again....and again!

This is very good in terms of getting a base ingredients. I sprinkled cinnamon and a little brown sugar all over the apples and then I made a rue (I stick of butter and about 1/2 cup of flour and 2 spoonfuls of sugar) and mixed that in as well. I kind of completely changed the top though...I did brown sugar, oats, flour, sugar and butter and just kind of eyeballed it. The combination was to die for. The rue made it so it wasn't just apples and juice but something more pie-like. AMAZING.

Very easy to do (after peeling the apples!) and my family enjoyed it very much. It was such a hit that it was gone by the next morning and they were begging for more. When I made it again my friends also loved it. This recipie will be added to my book of favorites!!

Made this today with a variety of apples from the orchard. I didn't have golden delicious so I cut the sugar a bit for the topping (used 1 1/4 cup) as suggested by some other reviewers. It was soooo good! And super easy to make. The longest part was peeling and cutting up the apples, but that's just me. Great flavor and great crust. Perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This recipe is definitely a keeper!

I made this and used a total of 2 cups of sugar - not the 2 3/4 cup the recipe calls for. It was fantastic. I used 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon and sprinkled over apples like the recipe calls for. Then I only used 1 1/4 cup sugar with the remaing ingredients to finish off the topping. Super easy too. Have you noticed that the recipes all use "STIR TOGETHER" I would love to see anybody stir it seperately !! LOL !!! The word "TOGETHER" is not necessary and redundant !!!

I followed this exactly and for the batter I got a doughy mixture, no crumbs, but I decided to roll with it anyway. I baked it for 40 minutes and at the end, the center was raw and the outside was done. The dough had basically just solidified at the top and insulated the apples from the heat so they were raw. The flavor was ok, nothing amazing. Very disappointed in this recipe especially considering all the good reviews. I won't be making this again, sorry.
This cobbler was a hit at our volundeer fire dept. fundraiser. Had so many compliments and request for the recipe. Used fresh apples from our fire dept apple tree!

This was much too sweet. The next time I make it I'm going to cut the sugar in half and see what happens. The ice cream adds more sweetness so cutting the sugar shouldn't be a problem.
I just made this cobbler for the first time, and based on helpful comments submitted previously, I decided to jump in with both feet and double the recipe to share some with family! I, too, reduced the sugar (by approx 1/2 cup), and that created the perfect balance of sweetness with the tartness of the apples. This is a fabulous recipe, not terribly fattening, and it is surprisingly simple! Although I have a small stash of servings in the freezer, it won't be long before I make this again!

I changed a few things while making these yummy apple cobbler: I cut back 1/2 cup of sugar in the flour mixture and added a pinch of all spice and nutmeg. It still tasted very sweet. The next time I make this recipe I think I'll cut back another 1/2 cup of sugar and add a little more cinnamon!

I have made this recipe quite a few times. It is so easy. I mix up my topping before I peel my apples, I get them peeled quickly enough and put the topping on while the butter is melting. I havent had the problem of the apples turning brown doing it this way. Great recipe, and yummy!
I always get people wanting my recipe every time I make this and bring it to work. My kids all love it as well. It is easy and a great dessert to take to a potluck.
I used half apples and half pears. I tossed them with some lemon juice and sugar to keep them from turning brown while I was preparing the fruit.
This recipe is out of this world!! Love it! I did make changes: I reduced the amounts of sugar and replaced 1 of the cups of sugar for splenda. For example, 3/4 sugar reduced to 1/2 and 2 cups of sugar reduced to 1 cup of sugar and 14 packets of Splenda. Yummy and still sweet enough!

This is, hands down, one of the best apple cobblers I've ever tried. I don't have my late grandmothers cobbler recipe so I went in search of one on-line and came across this one, and I'm glad I did! It reminded me of hers very much. I've made it twice in the past two weeks, and everyone I've shared it with has loved it. The simplicity of the recipe makes it all the more appealing.

Two thumbs, way up!
I made this years ago for the first time and everyone LOVED it. It now has become a holiday must. What I have done to this recipe is use green apples and cut back on about a cup of sugar. If you do this it tastes even better. (not as sweet) This year I think I am going to try the apple cookie cake. We will see how it compares.
This a excellent recipe, I like my apples a little more spicy and I add 1/2 tsp ground clove and 1/2 tsp Ginger with the sugar and cinnamon.
The Crumb topping bakes up perfect.
