Best Ever Spritz Cookie

The best ever recipe for buttery spritz cookies with festive variations, perfect for a Christmas party dessert.

Ingredients

1 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

Heat oven to 400°F.

Combine all ingredients except flour in bowl. Beat at medium speed until creamy. Add flour; beat at low speed until well mixed. Prepare dough as directed by variations below, if desired. (If dough is too soft, cover and refrigerate, 30-45 minutes.)

Place dough into cookie press fitted with template. Form desired shapes, 1 inch apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake 6-8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.




Variations:

Chocolate Chip Spritz: Add 1/4 cup coarsely grated semi-sweet chocolate.

Eggnog-Glazed Spritz: Add 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Glaze: Stir together 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 cup butter, softened, 2 tablespoons water and 1/4 teaspoon rum extract in small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over warm cookies.

Lebkuchen Spice Spritz: Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice and 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves. Glaze: Stir together 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla in small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over warm cookies.

Mint Kisses: Add 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract. Immediately after removing cookies from oven place 1 chocolate candy kiss on each cookie.

I maKe the cookies with this recipe because is easy and Was excellent. My nice 7 years old an my Nephew of 4 have fun making the cookies, the texture and taste excellent too,and I use land o lakes margarine.
Best ever spritz? Come on, it was so tasteless I ended up throwing away the entire batch. My 9 year old even said that they tasted like nothing. Shame, I had high hopes for this recipe based on other reviews.
I think these are very good but I am wondering if using some almond would make them a little sweeter? I kind of wish they were just a little sweeter!

Hi Diane, you could always substitute almond extract for vanilla extract if you wish. Sprinkling the cookies with sugar before baking can also help add a bit of sweetness. Happy baking!

I made these today and they turned out great. The first batch, I forgot the salt. I included it in the second batch. We all preferred the first batch, the second was too salty. 1/2 tsp was too much...
This is the first disaster I've had in a long time. It happens to all of us, but I've been a decent baker for years now. I bake Spritz Cookies every year, and now that it's Christmas Eve, realized that I hadn't this year. I made the dough, filled the press, and proceeded to blob out shapeless tufts that were allegedly Christmas Trees. The dough was a mess. This after letting it chill in the fridge for 40 minutes. After taking them out of the oven and letting them cool, the cookies crumbled to touch into cookie dust.
Luckily, there is the old fashioned recipe I always use on hand, and I'm grateful for the other desserts that I've already prepared.
This recipe did not work well in my Wilton's Spritz cookie press. It also didn't have much flavor. I will use another recipe next time.
Should i used salted or unsalted butter? Thanks!

Perfect texture for cookie press. We did them with shortening instead of butter and almond extract instead of vanilla, but I think they'd be great either way. I finally found a spritz recipe that I LOVE.
My cookies came out so small. Am I doing something wrong?
These cookies are delicious. Just baked them tonight. Exactly how I remembered my Moms tasted.
Did not change one thing the recipe was perfect!!

I have this recipe from my grandmother but it calls for 3 yolks instead of 1 egg. Other than the nutritional value, how does the whole egg affect the cookie versus 3 yolks?

This recipe was wonderful! I do not own a cookie press so I used the pastry bag method and the dough performed beautifully. Thanks for a great recipe!
Why does the dough stick? It won't release from the press?

Hi Nan, it sounds like your dough may be too soft. With spritz, it's important that the dough is soft enough to press through, but firm enough to hold their shape. Try refrigerating the dough until it reaches room temperature. You also might not have enough flour in the dough - try adding a small amount of flour (1-2 teaspoons) at a time until the dough is firm, but not too stiff. Hope this helps - happy baking!

Very good recipe. I was searching for a good spritz recipe, and when I saw this one with 2 tsp. vanilla -this made a lot of sense. Though I am only an occasional baker, I just had a feeling the other recipes which called for less vanilla and sugar just wouldn't have much taste. My family enjoyed these cookies very much and my cookie designs turned out quite well. (And I used Land o Lakes butter- it was the least I could do! I think we can indulge in real butter once in a while though I usually use Land o Lakes margarine) I assume I can freeze these cookies (I hope so because I just did for a couple dozen of them) Thanks again
Can I make this recipe using cookie cutters? For my entire life, my mother and I have made Spritz cookies with the cookie press, but I have a particular shape that I can only make with a cookie cutter.

I made this recipe for the first time and it was fantastic. I added 1/4 tsp of almond extract and substituted a vegan buttery spread (sorry Land o' Lakes, we are dairy free). The cookies were light and crisp. I sprinkled organic sugar on the cookies prior to baking and it worked really well. Thanks for the recipe. Its a keeper!

Easy recipe, a great addition to my cookie giveaway platters for Christmas. Very tasty. Good anytime of the year and will definitely make again.
I haven't made spritz cookies for a long time. I purchased a new cookie press and tried this recipe. Glad to report the press worked wonderfully and this recipe produced superlative spritz. Quick, easy and delicious! Can't beat that combo this time of year! I think I will make a 2nd batch.
Are we suppose to use salted or unsalted butter for all the cookie recipes?

I used almond extract, my 8 year olds response, "Momma you outdid yourself with these."
Excellent taste and texture. I added orange zest to half and mini sprinkles to the rest. Choc. drizzle on the sprinkled ones and a very light orange drizzle on the orange. Also, I made these a "one bite" and cutback on the baking time 9 min. Will be making these all year long! :-)
Tried many many Spritz recipes and this one is by far the best tasting one.
Easy, perfect, and delicious! They are the perfect mix of butter and a little sweetness. Next time, I'll double the batch!

My variation on this recipe is to add the grated zest of 1 orange. Yummy!! Especially good when partially dipped in chocolate.
I've decorated cookies for 40 years and made spritz cookies that long. Best spritz recipe I've ever made. Held their form. I put an egg white wash on before I sprinkled on sugar for shine. I'm keeping this recipe!

I have not baked cookies in YEARS, and I tried this one since I needed a Swedish cookie for my daughter's class party. I made the Mint Kisses version and it was a huge hit. I kept a batch for my family and the cookies disappear fast! I don't have a cookie press, so I used a pastry bag with a star tip, and the dough was soft enough to pipe through. I added some red and white peppermint crystal sprinkles, too. I will defintely be making this again.

I've never been a big cookie baker, so I made these tonight for a trial run before Christmas baking begins. I used almond extract. They came out awesome, and were so easy to make! I didin't have a cookie press, so I picked one up at Wal Mart for $10.00. Its the neatest thing! 1 click, 1 cookie. I definately recommend this recipe.
I'm not sure what the person did whose cookies melted everywhere. I followed the recipe exactly and they came out great! Worked perfectly in my cookie press :)
Cookies were hard right out of the oven. They were too sweet and tasted like a ball of caramelized sugar. Cookies melted to a thin flat sheet. I tried to refrigerate the dough and then bake and still came out lousy. Try something else with less sugar. Did not bake well at all.
Good rolled into balls too. Very easy to handle. I make it as a christmas tree spritz.
I have made these cookies for the last 3 years and won't use any other for spritz. My family loves them, and they are easy to make. Getting ready to make them with my granddaughter for Christmas again this year.

Excellent, crisp, tasty little cookie that can be flavored any way you want besides just vanilla. Easy to make.
