This cookie recipe includes many easy variations to the traditional butter cookie.
Heat oven to 400°F.
Combine sugar, butter and eggs in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add all remaining ingredients; beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed.
Divide dough in half; prepare desired variations using half of dough for each variation. Bake 7-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. .

MY FAMILY LOVES THIS RECIPE! Before I get the second batch out of the oven, the first batch is gone. I really like the fact that it's a basic recipe that allows me to be more creative. I have made this a lot over the years and it has always been a hit. My fathers-in-law said the plain version tasted just like the recipe his grandmother used to make that they called Tea cakes. These are great to take to a cookie swap party because 'they make such a large batch and with so many variations, there's a taste for everyone. I made them for a cookie swap at work and made plain, cinnamon/sugar, decorative sugar & coconut/powdered sugar. These were they only cookies there to go quickly, even over the homemade chocolate chip. This recipe is a staple in my recipe collection and I share it every chance I get. Thank you Land O Lakes!
Tried Cinnamon n' Sugar variation as well. Want a stronger cinnamon taste. Will increase cinnamon next time.
Not the best. I would not recommend this recipe. The oven temperature to be used I think is too high. The taste was so so.
We could not use this dough immediately--had to refrigerate, which disappointed the kids. Flavor was just ok. I have lots of better recipes.
I tried all of the variations here except "spice drops," and instead added ¾ C of M&Ms to that batch. Those went the quickest, but even friends who normally don't like coconut liked that variation. Excellent basic cookie batter.
This was quick easy and extremely tasty.My grandbaby loved them.
Very easy (no rolling), kids can help by rolling into balls and dropping on cookie sheet. True to it's name, versatile, can make many variations from same dough.
