My children only like LOL white anerican cheese, I have been making a modification of this recipe for over 20 years (I just came across this recipe while looking for something else). I use cavatapi or rotini instead of macaroni (more fun for the kids). I also put in a pound to a pound and a half of american cheese and a touch more milk. No cream cheese, and find it is much better made the day before - cooled refrigerated and reheated. Also cook with a cover on the baking dish or cover with tinfoil for all but the last 5 min of heating - I will keep the moisture in so it will not get that (dried out) look.texture.
I've been making this for years (with Cheddar), and it is by far the best Mac 'n' cheese I've ever had! Everyone who I've ever made it for loves it, too!
this recipe is not your original from the cookbook. it tastes better with cheddar cheese, not american.
you have changed this recipe since you first published it in your cook book. its supposed to be made with chedder cheese not american...that also covers the taste of cream cheese which is just supposed to add to the creamyness of the cheese....so i like the old one better

Thanks for your comment! Another idea would be to make this recipe with a combination of Cheddar and American as well.

I made this for my sisters graduation party and everybody could not stop talking about it. some even asked for the recipe! Sometimes american cheese can be a little dull so i would add a package of shredded cheddar cheese and to make it even creamier, i add a little more cream and more sliced cheese!
Just like the dish I loved as a child at family reunions. Wonderful!
If you like the taste of Philly c.c. you will enjoy this mac and cheese recipe.
I had this macaroni and cheese with bbq chicken for christmas. It tasted so good that my guest wanted the recipe.
This is our "Family Favorite" that we always have for special dinners like birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The cream cheese really makes the difference and the sauce is very creamy and smooth. Try it, you'll love it!!
I MADE THIS RECIPE FOR SUNDAY DINNER. THE TASTE IS WONDERFUL BUT IT ACTUALLY WAS A LITTLE DRY TO SUIT ME. I LEFT IT IN THE OVEN A LITTLE PAST THE FULL 20 MINUTES WHICH MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE DRYNESS. I INTEND TO TRY THE RECIPE AGAIN SOON SHORTENING THE BAKING TIME A BIT AND ADDING JUST A LITTLE MORE MILK.
THE BEST. I made this recipe for a church cookout last night and it was delicious. Everyone from the kids to the adults loved it. I have tried several other recipes but this one is by far, the best. It would be good even without the topping or baking it in the oven. This one is a keeper. The cream cheese gives it an extra layer of flavor. TRY IT. YOU'LL LOVE IT.

Corn on the Cob – Butter is Only the Beginning
August 11, 2014 by Samantha

Sweet corn on the cob is one of summer’s best treats. It’s my go-to stop at the Minnesota State Fair where they grill the corn in the husks, then peel back the husks and dunk them in vats of melted butter…mmm, is it late August yet?! More ...
