These chocolate pecan bars are baked with brown sugar, butter, pecans and chocolate to make unbelievably scrumptious bars.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Combine all crust ingredients except pecans in bowl. Beat at medium speed until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
Press onto bottom of ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan. Place pecans evenly over unbaked crust.
Combine 2/3 cup butter and 1/2 cup brown sugar in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until entire surface of mixture comes to a boil. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Pour evenly over pecans and crust.
Bake 18-22 minutes or until entire caramel layer is bubbly. (Do not overbake.) Remove from oven. Immediately sprinkle with chips; allow to melt slightly. Swirl chips leaving some whole for a marbled effect.

Awesome and easy. Did use "salted" butter. I baked it 10 minutes less because the top was bubbling earlier. Very easy - i am eating them all!!!

When I tried this recipe and boiled the caramel for a full minute, by the end the caramel was a big ball around my spoon. This was not very pourable at all. What should the texture of the caramel be when it is ready to go on the crust? One minute seems way too long to boil.
Something went very wrong and my bars were crumbly, the chocolate separated from the bar, and there was not enough caramel to spread around. Won't try again...

I have made this recipe forever - double the caramel, and use milk chocolate chips. It is one of the Christmas cookies everyone looks forward to!
After reading reviews, I was concerned about the crust being crumbly or falling apart, so I added an egg to the crust ingredients.. This made it easy to spread and it held together perfectly. My only problem was with the caramel topping, which I undercooked slightly and was a bit too gooey. Delicious anyway and my boys devoured them.
The bottom layer was too dry,crumbly, and tasted like flour. I thought about baking it for ten minutes before adding toppings or melting the butter when adding it to the floru and brown sugar. I will not make these again. Big waster of good, $$$, ingredients.
I made this recipe for a work party...everyone loved it! After reading the comments I added an additional 2 tbsp butter to the crust to help it hold together which worked for me. I also used both chocolate and butterscotch chips and didn't measure, just sprinkled them on top....I'm pretty sure I added more than the recipe calls for. After cooling slightly I put it in the fridge for about an hour to make it easier to cut them. I gave it 5 stars but that's with the adjustments made. Loved them and will definitely make them again!
I cannot give these cookie bars even one star. The cookie bar is grainy all the way through, the crust falls apart and the topping tastes terrible. I used all new product to make these and I will say they came out the worst recipe I have ever made. I followed the recipe all the way through and made the topping by stirring constantly and on a low to medium heat. Wasted product in the garbage can instead of sending to my husbands work for a potluck. What do I do now?.

I did something wrong here but I'm not sure what. The caramel is very sugary/grainy. I was very worried about it turning out too hard like some posters reported so maybe I didn't cook it long enough? Maybe the heat was too high? I so wanted these to turn out good. Any suggestions on what may have happened? In case I decide to try again...
I made this recipe twice and the first time there was not enough carmel to cover base, so the second time I increased topping to 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1 cup butter.While it tasted delicious, on some of the bars the chocolate/pecan topping separated from the base when I cut the bars. What did I do wrong to cause it to separate.
My son does not like nuts, I made this for my own birthday at school, two weeks later I made it for my son's birthday and at his suggestion I replaced the pecans with pretzels. OMG good! I wonder what else I should do.
These cookies should be named "OMGs" because that will be your first reaction uponbiting into them. I make these to please my ultra picky mother-in-law, that is when my husband lets her have any as he is addicted to them. He calls them his "crack" :-)
i've made these cookie bars at christmas every year since 1976 when i found the recipe in a land o lakes ad in a better homes & gardens magazine. they are a family favorite. i do notice that the weather affects the way they turn out, i live in florida and have found that high humidity is bad on most home made sweets.
I cut this recipe out of a magazine (probably Good Housekeeping) in 1976, long before you could search for recipes on the internet. It was featured in a holiday ad (next to Merry Cheese Cakes) for Land O Lakes butter and originally called "Butter Pecan Turtle Cookies" although we all know it's a bar! Family, friends and co-workers have all raved about how yummy it is. I accidentally misplaced it one year (horrors!) and luckily was able to get a copy from a friend to whom I had given the recipe. Now I have 3 copies of it, just in case. :) The original recipe called for milk chocolate chips, and normally I use a combination of milk and semi-sweet. Today I made it with all milk chocolate chips. I also usually use closer to 1-1/2 to 2 cups of pecans to cover the crust...just cuz.
I have been making this recipe since 1998. I could not find my recipe card this year. To be quite honest, I started to become a little panicked. I am extremely grateful this recipe is on your website!!! I would have had many, many friends and family members disappointed that these were not on the cookie tray this year. I have to make at least two pans each year of this bar. A Christmas cookie must have for this baker!
I started making this recipe about 30 years ago. It's simple and a crowd pleaser. My grown daughter just texted me for the recipe, and I couldn't find it. Thank goodness it's on your web site. These bars always come out great. If you over bake them, the crust will be harder but that happens with any crust. I'm going to try a little sea salt on them for Christmas.
I can't stop thinking about these things! They are soooo good and soooo addicting! They are my new favorites! The recipe is perfect the way it is, but it is a very verstatile recipe too. We've tried different toppings, doubled the caramel layer, more chocolate, less chocolate, added nuts into the crust, etc. No matter what we have tried, it was fabulous each time! :)

I took out the land o lakes butter to make a pound cake and saw this recipe and decided to try it. I realized I didn't have any chocolate chips so I put coconut on top instead. It was wonderful. My husband loved it.
Just finished making these and am blown away by how good they are. I was skeptical that they would set up and also worried I wouldn't be able to get them out of the pan. They turned out wonderfully! The only change I made was to chop the pecans and add them to the crust mixture. I also did add a little salt to the crust mixture as well. So yummy!

This I believe is the same recipe that used to be called "Turtle Cookie Bars" that I found in an ad in a mag. years ago. I used it for many years and everybody loved it and always asked for the recipe. At a Christmas Party last year this bar was the only desert that was totally gone by the end of the evening. It is excellent!
I love this cookie! It is so easy to make and so delicious. I prefer walnuts to pecans and I use milk chocolate chips.

I have the original recipe from the inside of the Land O' Lakes butter box. It is requested by many for the holidays. I use milk chocolate chips as the original recipe calls for.
These cookie bars are fantastic and a big crowd pleaser. I have been making them for years. I add a pinch of salt to the crust and I sprinkle the top with a little sea salt before I bake. I also use 3/4 cup milk chocolate instead.
I prefer candy recipes to list a temperature. It's hard to know if you followed the directions as intended.Reading the reviews, I put a 1.5x batch of the caramel (less than a double batch). I would definitely double it. It seemed like butter separated out of the caramel, so I might try the caramel with a little less butter next time. I thought the chocolate (I used semi-sweet chips) was a bit overpowering.
My mother started making these when I was a little girl (now 41). They are sooo incredibly good!! I make them now & they are super easy. I'll bring them to holiday parties & they are always 1 of the first things to go!

Well, i think I did something wrong? I was not able to spread the caramel center over the entire crust is there something anybody could tell me to do different. Although it taste good i did not care for the presentation. I grew up baking since i was a young child and this seemed like a simple recipe but lacked in details. Is the caramel suppose to cover the entire crust?That should be listed in the instructions. I feel like i wasted my money in trying to make this and I am disappointed.
One of the best and easiest recipes I've ever made. I make these at least 4-5 times each Christmas. Make sure you add butterschotch chips for an even better taste!!
My husband's favorite. I modify it from an older LOL recipe that included butterscotch chips as well. Very good and very rich!!
My mom made the original recipe of these bars, which was printed on the inside of your butter carton many years ago. The original name for these delectable bars is Butter Pecan Turtle Bars and originally called for milk chocolate chips...I have the original recipe clipped from the carton and I laminated it to preserve it...The bars are made on a regular basis for friends and they are everyone's favorite...even my husband's who claims he doesn't like chocolate...it must be that great butter!
My friends and I nicknamed these cookies the "crack bars" because they are like an addiction. So delicious. Making a batch on Saturday for a get together.
My co-worker made these for our company lunch and it's now one of my favorite bars. She did increase the caramel though. 1 cup butter and 3/4 cup brown sugar.Yummy!
There was way too much dough for the base; It was also difficult to get out of the pan. I do not think this was worth making and did not meet my expectations of your recipes. A waste of time and ingredients.
thank goodness you have a website!. I was going through my mom's recipes and found this cut out from a butter wrapper. She had two of them but she cut the directions off. They are dated fromMarch and April 2001. I know she made these and they are good. My mother tended to write down ingredients for a recipe and not how to make it from there, because she knew, but I don't always know how. Thank you once again for your website, now I can continue to make these bars myself.
I have been making these bar cookies ever since Land O Lakes first came out with the recipe when I was a kid. They are awesome. Bonnie, start timing the brown sugar and butter the minute you see the very first bubble around the edges, that way you can't over cook it.
From the Test Kitchens...When a candy type mixture like the topping on this bar cooks a little too long the mixture gets too hard. Between the time of cooking it in the pan and then the baking of it on top of the crumb crust was too much and the candy mixture hardened. As indicated this bar should not be over baked.It is a wonderful bar and I would encourage you to try it again.
I must have done something wrong because mine came out so hard, they almost break your teeth when you bite into them. I followed the recipe exactly as written. Can someone tell me what went wrong?
These are positively the best cookies ever. The crust has a delicate crunch and the nuts and chocolate go perfectly with it. I have been making these cookies for years for the holidays and plan on continuing. Don't use cheap butter. Definitely use Land O Lakes.
In the recipe where does it state how to make the caramel layer, do you buy caremels?
This has become a family favorite. Works great for parties with a few tweaks. I spread the crust out very thin on a large baking sheet. I then increase the caramel by 1.5 times to cover and increase the chips to 2 cups. Whenever my kids need to bring something to school the revised recipe can fill a bucket with treats.

These have been a tradition in our house for many years. They are very easy and quick to make.
Few ingredients, easy to make and delicious. Made them twice for Thanksgiving get-togethers. I made them in a disposable pan that came with a plastic lid and they were very transportable.
This is one of those 'special occasion', always a hit recipe. I make this for fund raisers, holidays, and when I want to show off. I have made this recipe since I was a teen ager, so it's easy to make. So if you want to impress anyone, I would suggest you try this. I LOVE this recipie and so do my boys. (all grown now) Last Christmas my niece told me I should set up a booth at the mall, or try to sell them from home! My second oldest son loves for me to make these every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Sometimes I melt a bag of caramels and add to the caramel layer. Sometimes I use milk chocolate peices, and usually add 1 tsp. vanilla to the caramel layer. They are wonderful!!!
The first time I made these at Christmas, they were gone so quickly I had to make another batch!! Now I have to make them every year at Christmas or I'll be asked to make them anyway.(My son-in- law expects them as a present every year too). I did not change a thing with this recipe.
These cookies were so good! I make them every year at Christmas time. They are always the first to go on the cookie plate!
