Bavarian apple tart that has moist, sweet apples nestled in a cream cheese layer atop a sweet crust.
Heat oven to 375°F.
Combine all crust ingredients in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until dough leaves sides of bowl and forms a ball. Press onto bottom of 10-inch springform pan.
Combine 1/2 cup sugar, cream cheese, eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla in same bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until smooth. Spread mixture over crust.
Place apples in another bowl. Sprinkle with 1/3 cup sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom; toss to coat. Arrange apples in concentric circles over filling, pressing narrow end of apple slices into cream cheese mixture.
Bake 45 minutes. Sprinkle with almonds; continue baking 15-20 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely.
Remove rim from springform pan. Cut into wedges. Store refrigerated.

could I use chopped walnut ontop instead of almonds and would it be OK to add these at the beginning instead of halfway through the baking?

I have been making this dessert for 30 years! At Passover, I make a matzo nut crust which works out very well. I learned to make this dessert in a cooking class and it's still one of my favorites, year around!
Easy and delicious
This is my go to dessert when I go to someones home. Not only is it delish, but professional looking as well. I always get rave reviews. Very easy to make and a sure hit with everyone.
I made this for a dinner party, and it was such a hit! Everyone bragged about it, and wanted the recipe! Of course I told them to check out Land O'Lakes website for this delicious recipe! My only concern in baking it was that I kept it in the oven for longer than the total recommended time of 65 minutes, and still was not able to have a clean knife when inserted in the center. So I decided it had been in long enough, took it out of the oven, cooled it, then chilled it in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving. It was cooked through, so there was no need to worry. Recommend this recipe!
I've been making this recipe for years and it's always a hit. I like making it in the fall as a slight change from all the apple pies.
This is best served chilled.
I recently tried out this recipe for my family, and staff at my son's business.Everyone raved about it - I have made it 3 times since, and will probably make it for the holidays. I would like to eat the whole thing myself!!!
