This Scandinavian holiday bread is filled with candied fruit, raisins and almonds.

1 ((1/4-ounce) package active dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115°F.)
3 1/4 to 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup milk
2/3 cup chopped mixed candied fruit
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/3 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel
1 cup powdered sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Candied cherries, if desired
Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl. Add
flour, milk, candied fruit, raisins, almonds, sugar, 1/4 cup butter, egg, salt, cardamom and lemon peel. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour by hand to make dough easy to handle.
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes). Place in greased bowl; turn greased-side up. Cover; let rise in warm place until double in size (about 1 1/2 hours). (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)
Punch down dough; shape into round loaf. Place in greased 9-inch round cake pan. Brush top of dough with melted butter. Cover; let rise until double in size (about 1 hour).
Heat oven to 350°F.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan immediately. Cool completely.
Stir together powdered sugar and enough milk for desired glazing consistency in small bowl. Spread over bread. Garnish with candied cherries, if desired..
