Chocolate sheet cake that is saucepan-mixed and topped with a fabulous fudgy frosting is best served at a large gathering such as a family reunion or open house event.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Combine 1 cup butter, water and 1/4 cup cocoa in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 6-7 minutes or until mixture comes to a boil. Remove pan from heat. Add flour, sugar and salt; mix well. Add sour cream, eggs and baking soda; beat until smooth.
Spread batter into greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Bake 20-22 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Combine 1/2 cup butter, 1/4 cup cocoa and milk in 2-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 3-4 minutes or until mixture comes to a boil.
Remove from heat. Add powdered sugar; beat until well mixed. Stir in pecans and vanilla. Spread over warm cake.

A thin layer of creamy peanut butter between the cake and frosting is delicious!!!!
Just made this cake for the first time for our Chili & Chocolate Party at work. Hope I win the "blue ribbon". One person had a sample and loved it! I guess this recipe is a keeper.

I have been making this cake for years, accidently put in 1 cup of sour cream once, made it that way ever since. I also have made it in a 13x9 and it just cooks a little longer. The frosting seeps into the cake and becomes fudgy goodness. Just the right amout of chocolate - not too rich.
This is the best sheet cake I have ever had...I have used it for pot lucks, bake sales, and birthday cake and everyone always raves about how wonderful it is.
This recipe is so easy and for anyone with a chocolate craving this is the cake to make. My friends just loved it !
Land O' Lakes put a similar recipe out over 30 years ago in a brochure and I've used it ever since. It called for unsweetened chocolate squares instead of cocoa but I've often substituted for it. My daughter asked for the recipe so I came back to Land O' Lakes first before typing it all out. Thank you for great recipes!
