A fudgy brownie recipe with chocolate frosting perfect for when you need brownies for a crowd.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Melt butter and chocolate in 3-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, 5-8 minutes or until smooth. Remove from heat; stir in sugar. Add sour cream, eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla; mix well. Stir in flour and salt just until moistened.
Spread batter into greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Bake 20-25 minutes or until brownie begins to pull away from sides of pan. (Do not overbake.) Cool completely.
Melt chocolate chips and shortening in 1-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, 3-5 minutes or until smooth. Stir in powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and enough milk for desired spreading consistency. Spread over cooled brownies. Cut into bars.

This recipe was good, but definitely not the best brownie recipe I have used. It was not as chocolatey as I like. I will probably go back to other recipes. But, if you need a big pan of brownies for some occasion, this would certainly work.
The brownie itself is very, very soft - even to the edges! More so the next day. However, I did not care for the frosting and made another version the next time I made these. I would definitely put these on top of my favorites list for brownies.
Every day, they get better and better.
I really enjoyed these brownies, especially being able to use a cookie cutter and decorate them for little kids. The only suggestion I'd make is to add to the recipe directions: allow the butter/chocolate/sugar mixture to cool a bit or advise customers to stir eggs in quickly. I did not let my mixture cool very long and my egg whites began to cook in the bowl while mixing. It was nothing that a little vigorous motion couldn't cure, but it very easily could have been a disaster!
I do a lot of baking and giving away to friends and everyone agrees this recipe is without a doubt THE BEST as far as brownies go On a scale of 1 to 10 it's a 20 I'm addicted to baking so I'm very glad I found your site Shirley
I made these brownies for a potluck at work. Everyone said they were the best they ever had. Several people asked for the recipe. One of my co-workers took some home to her teenage son and he asked her to make those Brownies that Julin made.
You have to try this one if you or your audience likes chocolate. The cake part has a velvety texture, almost like a firm mousse, and the frosting is hardly visible, but makes a huge difference, so don't be tempted to leave it off. I've only made it twice and have had lots of requests for another serving.
