Moist, rich chocolate cookies are the perfect canvas for children to paint on.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Combine sugar, 1 cup butter and sour cream in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla; continue beating until well mixed. Add all remaining cookie ingredients; beat at low speed until well mixed.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets; flatten slightly with palm of hand. (Dough will be soft and sticky. If dough sticks to hands, lightly flour hands.) Bake 8-10 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely.
Combine all frosting ingredients in bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy.
Combine 2 cups powdered sugar and enough milk in bowl for thin glazing consistency. Divide glaze into 2 bowls; tint red and green with food color.
Frost two or three cookies at a time. Apply drops of glaze using small paintbrushes; create swirled design using toothpick. Sprinkle with decorator sugars or candies, if desired. Repeat with remaining cookies.
