Old-Fashioned Date Bars

This buttery oatmeal bar is filled with dates and bring back memories.

3/4 cup water
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 (8-ounce) package chopped dates


1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup uncooked quick-cooking oats
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened


Grease 8-inch square baking pan; set aside.

Combine water, 1/4 cup brown sugar and dates in 1-quart saucepan. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, 4-5 minutes or until mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Cool at least 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350°F.

Combine all crust ingredients in bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup.

Press remaining crumbs into prepared pan. Spoon filling over crust; sprinkle with reserved crumbs. Bake 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely. Cut into bars.

This is a wonderful old fashioned recipe that is moist in the middle and has a crunchy crust and topping. Plus, a 8" square pan makes just the right amount. Delicious with a cup of coffee or tea. I have even had them for a deilsh breakfast! This is a family favorite.
This is a delicious recipe. I usually double the recipe for a 9x13 pan. It is just like my mom's and I only wish she was still here to enjoy it with me!
Great and easy. Delicious. I followed the recipe exactly but added 1/2 ts baking powder to the flour mixture. I don't know the difference if I didn't added it though. Thanks for sharing. I will definitely make it again
This is an excellent recipe. I made it for a family brunch and even those that didn't care for dates loved it. I followed the recipe exactly. It reminds me of my childhood in Minnesota. It's in my new cookie rotation.
