These crisp sugar cut-out cookies can be decorated to capture the spirit of your occasion.
Combine 1 cup butter, sugar and egg in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until creamy. Add all remaining cookie ingredients; beat at low speed until well mixed. Divide dough into thirds; wrap in plastic food wrap. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or until firm.
Heat oven to 400°F. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface, one-third at a time (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut with 2-inch cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake 6-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely.
Combine powdered sugar, 1/3 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla in small bowl. Beat at low speed, adding enough milk for desired spreading consistency. Tint frosting with food color, if desired. Frost and decorate cooled cookies as desired. .

I asked a friend for her recipe because we love her sugar cookies. They are thin, light and crispy. Turns out it's this recipe. Love the recipe taste, but had some execution difficulties, even though I followed the directions to a "T". (except for rolling pin cover--I used teflon rolling pin). If you roll to 1/8 inch thickness, the dough becomes soft quite quickly, sticking to counter, cookie cutter or your hands. I used more flour on the counter and still had trouble with some and more flour with each re-rolling of scraps, so with all this additional flour, I'm thinking I should just add more flour when making the dough. Don't want to go to a thicker 1/4 inch cookie, because I'm afraid I'll lose the crispness we love.Anyone else have this problem? Or is it just what you have to deal with when making cut out sugar cookies? Thanks for any suggestions.
These cookies are a Christmas tradition in our house. I have been using this recipe for years! It was given to me by my friends mother. I didn't know where she got it until I found it in my Land O Lakes cookie cookbook! It is my favorite cut-out recipe and the kids love them as well!
This recipe takes good, but it DOES NOT work as a mold!! The cut out shapes did not hold up.
My grandma found this recipe when I was little, and we've made it every Christmas season since. Now that I'm out on my own and married, it is still a part of our Christmas tradition!!

I made this cookie after trying out so many recipes, even from allrecipe .com.all came out horrible. this was the best recipe , everybody loved it. i made flower bouquet and will share the pics too.more than 5 star, i will give 100 stars to this recipe.

This is my go to sugar cookie recipe. Not dry and crumbly like some sugar cookies.They always turn out great and I always get asked to make more.
Very easy to mix and bake. I used a round cutter and made snowman faces on them. Great taste. My grandchildren loved them.
Easy to mix and roll out, with excellent icing. Good to make with children and just eat. I used lemon juice to replace the OJ. (ran out of oj)Still had a great taste.
