Caramel apple upside-down cake that will remind you of trips to the apple orchard and biting into fresh, sweet fruit.
Heat oven to 350°F.
Place 1/2 cup brown sugar into bowl; cut in 3 tablespoons butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in sunflower nuts. Press onto bottom of greased 9-inch round cake pan. Arrange apple slices on top. Set aside.
Combine flour, baking powder and salt in bowl. Set aside.
Combine 2/3 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup butter in another bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until smooth. Add flour mixture alternately with milk until well mixed.
Spoon batter over apple layer; spread evenly. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes; invert onto serving plate. Serve warm or cool.

it's easy ,yet sooooo delicious recipe,i had both suflower and walnuts.i used walnuts,1ts grated orange peel and just a little cinnamon.it was a heavenly cake with strong fragrance and taste of apple. maybe i bake it for my next birthday [:D
My picky teenager ate two slices on the first go round. The flavors are wonderful and such a light cake.Thank you so much for sharing.
This was great... Some changes that I made; 1) I doubled the butter, brown sugar and apples and made a 9 x 13 cake, 2) Tossed the apple slices with some ground cinnamon and ground allspice before placing them in the pan, 3) used a yellow cake mix for the cake batter. Baked the cake for the same 40 minutes as the recipe had placed. This was so easy that it will be my favorite to make for the family.
My husband said this was good, but nothing special. I did substitute walnuts for sunflower nuts.
A very deliciouos dessert! I did not have sunflower nuts on hand so I substituted with walnuts. Very good and easy to make. I will most certainly make this again. I served it warm with vanilla ice-cream..
I made two of these to use up some apples I had, and gave one away. This cake is delicious!! And easy! I made a few changes: I used chopped pecans instead of sunflower seeds because I had them on hand, and thought they'd be like pecan rolls. I also sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon on the apple slices. Also, instead of placing the sliced apples in the dish before making the dough, I made the dough first before slicing them to keep them from browning. This got rave reviews! A friend of mine kept describing it as "really smooth". I will try it next with some pears that I have on hand to use them up.
Excellent dessert! I subbed toffee pieces for the sunflower seeds. My ladies brunch group loved it!
