Marie's Chocolate Cake

This moist, high chocolate cake has a red interior color typical of chocolate cakes leavened with baking soda.

Ingredients

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
1/2 cup sour milk
2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate, melted
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup boiling water
Powdered sugar, if desired

Directions

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 13x9-inch baking pan; set aside.

Combine sugar and butter in bowl; beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add sour milk, melted chocolate, eggs and vanilla; continue beating until smooth. Add flour, baking soda and salt; beat at low speed until well mixed. Add boiling water; continue beating until smooth.

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Dust cake with powdered sugar or serve with dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Recipe Tip

To sour milk, place 1 1/2 teaspoons vinegar plus enough milk to equal 1/2 cup in small bowl; let stand 5 minutes.

This is a very good chocolate cake. I will be making it for the second time. Since it's made with butter it doesn't have that boxed cake mix quality. Moist and not overpowering. Used a chocolate buttercream on top. *I used only 3/4 c water.
I realy enjoyed making this recipe, and its delisious, have fun baking, and you will find out how enjoyable it is baking .
OMG this should be illegal! The best I have ever had!(and, I'm a picky eater!)
I enjoyed the basic cake recipe.
I feel it needs a fresh fruit [sliced strawberries or peaches, add 1/2 c of granulated sugar, allow it to sit 30-45 minutes until a juice forms] garnish to emphasize what an excellent cake you have. Standing alone with just a dusting of powdered sugar just doesn't seem to present it as it should be.
I do not actually feel it needs an icing but perhaps the topping LOL offers with it's Cinnamon Sugar Butter Spread would give it that extra emphasis I feel it requires
In a pinch you could whip a 1/2 pint of whipping cream with 1/4 c. granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp. grated nutmeg. Serve each slice topped with a dollop of the seasoned whipped cream..
