Lamb Cupcakes

These cute decorated cupcakes are perfect for your spring dessert tray.

1 (15.25- to 16.5-ounce) package white cake mix
1 cup milk
1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
2 teaspoons freshly grated orange zest
1 (1.5-ounce) bottle flower-shaped cake sprinkles


1 1/2 cups Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 (7-ounce) jars marshmallow crème


1 (10.5-ounce) package miniature marshmallows
24 black gumdrops
Decorator candy eyes
Licorice pieces or licorice nibs


Heat oven to 350°F. Place paper baking cups into 24 muffin pan cups; set aside. 

Combine all cupcake ingredients except sprinkles in bowl; beat on low speed until combined. Beat at medium speed until well mixed. Stir in sprinkles. 

Spoon batter evenly into muffin cups. Bake 18-22 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 minutes in pan; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely. 

Combine 1 1/2 cups butter, powdered sugar and vanilla in bowl. Beat on medium speed until creamy. Add marshmallow crème; continue beating until well mixed. Set aside. 

Create lamb faces by using palm of hand to flatten gumdrops to 1/4-inch thickness. Poke holes into gumdrops for nostrils. Attach candy eyes and licorice pieces for ears, using frosting to adhere. Set aside. 

Frost cupcakes, creating mound of frosting in center. Attach 1 lamb face on front 1/3 of each cupcake. Place miniature marshmallows onto cupcakes, pressing into frosting to adhere. Attach licorice pieces or licorice nibs for tails.

Recipe Tip

Black gumdrops can be found in candy stores or in the bulk bins or in mixed packages at discount, grocery or drug stores. The recipe has also been tested using other colors of gum drops (white, pink) or a large marshmallow cut in half for the face. The “eyes” for the lambs can be purchased in discount chain stores, craft stores or cake decorating stores in the candy and cake decorating section. Dark cupcake liners and the candy flowers can also be purchased in this area. Other colors of cupcake liners could also be used.

I love this frosting! I use it on cakes and everything I do now. It's pure white, so great for dying. Nothing needs refrigeration, so I'm comfortable leaving leftovers out on the counter. Plus, it tastes like marshmallows! I didn't have any trouble with it sliding around. Are you all using marshmallow creme, found by the marshmallows in your store, rather than a marshmallow ice cream topping or something like that? For the gumdrops, try a bulk candy bin. You can pick out the black ones. :) I couldn't find them the first time I made these, and we ended up using chocolate eggs instead. It worked well.
What a waste of time and money! I too found that the frosting slid right off the cupcake. I added more and more powdered sugar in an attempt to thicken it but it didn't work. I ended up frosting the cupcakes as best I could and decorated with the gumdrops and some sprinkles.
I made these adorable cupcakes for Easter. My family enjoyed them tremendously and we sent pictures of the "flock" to all our friends and relatives.
My 11 year old Grandson & I made these. They orange cupcakes where delicious, only change we made was to add an additional 1/2 tsp orange flavoring along with the orange juice and zest because I really like orange. The frosting was awesome, I'll be making that recipe again, I didn't have any problems at all with the frosting, it was very creamy and tasted yummy. We used a 1 TBLSP. scoop for the frosting and just smoothed the frosting to the edges of the cupcakes so that made the perfect size mound so frosting the cupcakes went very quickly.The only trouble we had was getting the eyes to stick because the Wilton candy eyes have such a glossy finish they kept sliding off. We worked with it a bit and eventually they did stick but it took awhile, so next year I'll be making up a tiny batch of the edible glue frosting like you would use for making gingerbread houses. Also next year we will make the faces the night before so eyes will stay attached to the gum drop. We got plenty of compliments for the lambs cuteness from all of our guests at Easter dinner. The frosting isn't thick enough to hold the marshmallows and head from sliding off the cupcakes. I'm working on these right now for Easter . I am frustrated with just the one and about to give up on the others. I'm sticking the frosting in the frig or adding more powered sugar to see if that helps. Other wise I'm done with this mess!
Very disappointing for all the effort and sticky mess. Looks more like a turkey than a. Lamb and so loaded with sugar I would never serve to my family.
LOVE IT LOVE IT! Big hit with my sons preschool class made them for snack time went well with there theme for school and Easter! For some one like me that is not real creative in making cupcakes this was really easy, loved the frosting and the cupcakes were really soft and great tasting! Actually to tell you my son is 5 and he did most of the decorating!! FUN IDEA!!!!
My granddaughter and I made these recently. I agree that the frosting was too gooey and wouldn't hold its shape, so the lambs were flat on top, and frosting and marshmallows slid down the sides. I even added a couple cups more powdered sugar to try to stiffen it. After making each one, I put it in the fridge to try to hold what shape they had. I couldn't find black gum drops so used colored ones for the faces. They seemed like such a cute treat,to make, but ours didn't look anything like the professionally done lambs in the picture.
Attempted to make these today for a kindergarten spring party. I, too, found that the frosting just ran right off, taking the marshmellows with it. Also, using the frosting to attach the eyes failed completely, and the eyes were sliding all over the place and falling off. Ended up scrapping the idea completely, adding a lot more powdered sugar to the frosting to make it a better consistency, and coloring the frosting blue. Instead of the sheep I was planning to take, I'm now stuck with boring blue frosted cupcakes with sprinkles. I would not recommend this recipe at all. I will stick with ideas from Family Fun--never had a problem with their recipes.

the recipe for the frosting didnt work at all. I think the marshmellow creme made it too gooey, it literally just drooled off the cupcakes, what a mess and waste of money. I made a double batch of frosting so my kids could take them to their teachers and I could take some to work. ummm 3 pounds of butter, sugar, 4 jars of marshmellow creme...all in the trash. the garbage men are going to have a great time with my gallon of white gack.

Only slightly fussy to make but well worth the effort as they are so darn cute and a big hit. The hardest part is finding the large black gum drops. Unless you have a great source you too may have to buy 4 bags of assorted colors to get enough black. Worth it anyway, but I do think it important that the cupcakes be chocolate.
My 11 year old daughter and I just made these today and it was pretty easy...she really did all the work and I stood there and giggled at their extreme cuteness! Not sure why anybody would rate them difficult to make. They did take some time to decorate, but it wasn't hard. Just plan on spending an hour or so making them look adorable. We delivered some to friends with a note saying, "You've been Lamb-O-Grammed!" Huge hit!
Our last name is Lamb-they were a HUGE hit at our family reunion. Had a blast making them!
It was too many calories and it was too hard to make.
It would be really great if a recipe could be positioned so that it would print out on one sheet of paper when the "Print" choice is made. The recipe looks like fun & one young & old will enjoy. Thanks for the inspiration.
