Everyone loves this classic creamy macaroni and cheese recipe that’s made with American cheese.
Heat oven to 350°F. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain.
Melt butter in 3-quart saucepan until sizzling; stir in flour, salt and pepper. Add half & half; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, 5-7 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens .
Reduce heat to low; stir in cheese. Cook 3-5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Add cooked macaroni; mix well.
Spoon into ungreased 2-quart casserole. Bake 25-30 minutes or until heated through.

This was very, very good and so easy. I'll be making it again soon.
My youngest son will only eat boxed macaroni & cheese and is very picky. I made this recipe last night he loved it along with everyone else in my family, thank you.
I used ricotta instead of half and half and it turned out delicious. A little sriracha and basil when serving and it's great!
This was excellent! I used Swiss and American cheese, milk instead of half & half, and I added lobster. It turned out very creamy and my husband absolutely loved it!
Wow. I was a little skeptical at first as to how good a Macaroni and Cheese recipe calling for only American cheese would taste. It turned out to be the best mac and cheese I've ever made. Adding finely diced onions and mushrooms really lifts this dish to new heights and brings everything together wonderfully. Try this recipe!
I made this using a 2 lb.LOL-Cheesy chub that I needed to use up(Just dbl the recipe). Very good! After it cooked in the oven I put under the broiler to brown the top up. I added a pinch of nutmeg & a bit a dry mustard in the sauce with some dry bread crumbs mixed with butter on top YUMMY!!! Note use a disposable pan
Loved this recipe!! I've been looking for a creamy mac and cheese recipe for awhile and when I found this one it looked like it had the makings of the perfect mac and cheese to me. I will definately make this one over and over again, It was delicious!
i made this for Christmas, and everyone just loved it. two peopls asked for the recipe.
I discovered this recipe a few years ago when I volunteered to bring mac & cheese to a family get together. It was gone in no time and I have been declared the queen of macaroni. I shudder to think of the reaction my family would have if I showed up without this dish! I bring it every time, and have even been asked to make a separate batch for a relative instead of buying a Christmas gift this year.
I made this because all I have in my kitchen were american cheese slices, milk, an onion and some elbow noodles. So I made this recipe I sliced up a red onion and put it in as well and some Frank's red hot sauce. It's really good. I didn't add as much flour as this recipe called for and i didn't add as much butter but it really didn't make a difference it was good. I had a chicken breast as well but i wasn't sure at the time about adding it. Next time I think I will make it with chicken. It would be like a buffalo chicken american mac and cheese. the hot sauce is always a good choice :)
My Mom would layer an extra few pieces of cheese on the top before she put the casserole in oven...YUM!!!
I would add diced tomatoes to this recipe, that would make it perfect a perfect Casserole Dinner.
This was amazing!I didn't place in oven just on stovetop but the sauce was great! My husband kept raving about it.
Very yummy and super easy to make. I add crushed ritz crackers (mixed with butter) to the top of mine for an extra delicious dish!
Yummy, cheesy, gooey and most delicious! Wicked easy! Taste great not baked and baked! And I wasn't even raised on this stuff.
I really wanted something white and creamy for dinner tonight, it was just one of those days. I remembered going camping with some friends several years ago and someone had made homemade macaroni and cheese with american cheese and I was in awe never having known such a simple thing. So I googled for a recipe and came across this one and I am so glad that I did! It was so delicious and creamy! I added a half tablespoon extra of flour to make it slightly thicker because I didn't want to bake it in the oven. I used 1% milk instead of half & half. I also used the individually packaged american cheese slices, but didn't quite have enough so I also added a small chunk of extra sharp cheddar cheese I had in the fridge. Mmmm mmmm good! My husband also loved it, he even went back for seconds which speaks for itself! Will be adding this recipe (with my minor adjustments) to the collection!
Didn't have any boxed mac n cheese, so I made this for my fiance after she had got home late from work. She loved it. I didn't bake it nearly as long as the recipe suggested, just long enough to get everything hot.
Love it and so did my company.
It was "average". The amount of sauce made it too soupy for my liking, and you could feel the texture of the flour, thus not making it "creamy". I'm still searching for the ultimate mac n cheese recipe.
My picky kids asked for seconds. It was easy and delicious!
This turned out better than I expected! I subsituted the cheese in this recipe with American cheese slices...it was the only thing I had since we're snowed in. ?
Fast, easy and really good. The whole family likes it
I've taken this to family reunions and gatherings. I add small bits of ham and brocolli sometimes and it's always a big hit. The kids love it too. Excellent recipe.
This is the creamiest mac and cheese that I have ever made and it was so good. I did add some cayenne pepper, nutmeg just a hintand dry yellow mustard. I also added a bread crumb topping.
My family loved this dish. It was like going to grandma's as a child.
the best ever
