Ultimate Chewy Brownies

Chewy brownies are underneath the sweet, flaky crust of this ultimate brownie.

2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate
1 (1-ounce) square semi-sweet baking chocolate
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt


Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottom only of 8-inch square baking pan. Set aside.

Melt butter, unsweetened chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate in 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, 4-7 minutes or until smooth. Remove from heat.

Stir in sugar and vanilla. Add 1 egg at a time; mix well after each addition. Stir in flour and salt; mix just until all ingredients are moistened and brownie mixture is smooth.

Spread brownie mixture into prepared pan. Bake 25-32 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of pan comes out with moist crumbs. (Do not overbake.) Cool completely.


Flavored Brownies: Substitute 1 1/2 teaspoons extract or flavoring (mint, almond, etc.) for vanilla.

Stir-ins: One-half cup stir-ins (nuts, chips, toffee bits, etc.) may be stirred into brownie mixture before baking.

Candy-Topped: Before baking, sprinkle brownie mixture with 1/2 cup candy-coated chocolate pieces.

Chocolate Drizzled: Drizzle cooled brownies with white chocolate or dark chocolate drizzle.

Recipe Tip

- Reduce baking temperature by 25°F if using a dark or nonstick baking pan.

- To prepare brownies in 13x9-inch pan, double all ingredients; bake 35-40 minutes.

This recipe is horrible. It needs more chocolate. It also does not look like the picture on the site. As one reviewer posted save your ingredients. Continue looking for another recipe. When you find a good one email me.

We have categorized brownies into three types: cakey, chewy and fudgy. It depends on what type of brownie you like. This one is chewier and not as fudgy as some other brownies. Why not try the Ultimate Fudgy Brownie recipe?

I made this recipe for the first time and was pleased with how easy it is. The brownies turned out with a very silky texture with a little chewy-ness. I added 1 cup of chopped walnuts which may have had an effect on the texture, but I will definitely make these again.
If you like the chewy, gooey brownies, THESE are the ones you want to make! Absolutely DELICIOUS!!
The brownies were very cake-like - not chewy at all. I followed the instructions to a T. We were not happy with these.

the brownies were too thick too sugary more like fudge gone wrong nobody liked them we threw them away waste of time and ingredients
