Brown Butter Cookie Recipe

Old Fashioned Browned Butter Cookies

Butter cookies are great, but nothing can match the unbelievable flavor of browned butter in these cookies.

3 1/2 dozen cookies

3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
Decorator sugars


Melt 1 cup butter over medium-high heat in heavy 2-quart saucepan. Continue cooking, watching closely, until butter foams and just turns a delicate golden color (3 to 5 minutes). Immediately remove from heat; refrigerate 30 minutes.

Heat oven to 350°F. Combine browned butter, sugar, egg and vanilla in large bowl. Beat at medium speed until well mixed. Continue beating, gradually adding flour, until well mixed.

Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in decorator sugars. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten with tines of fork.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Let stand 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets. Cool completely.

Recipe Tip

For creative designs, try a variety of kitchen utensils to flatten cookies (meat fork, meat mallet, cookie stamps, pastry blender, bottom of patterned glass, etc.).

Yum. Perfect, buttery, almost like shortbread!
I added 3/4 cup of chopped pecans to the dough. Did NOT roll in colored sugar, rather after rolling into balls, I flattened them slightly with a glass dipped on white sugar. Awesome!

I & my children honestly love these cookies. They aren't to sweet and they have the best flavor....Simple and easy!
I used to have this recipe from Land O Lakes that also included the recipe for a Browned Butter Frosting (browned butter, conf sugar, vanilla, corn syrup and water) and had lost it. Now with this recipe and my memory of the frosting, I have my kids favorite cookie back! My kids love the White Velvet Cut Outs cookie recipe for Christmas but after having these they say these are the best! The frosting is a must for that cut out cookie flavor!
My husband has high sugar. I have tried numerous recipes subsituting a sweetner for the sugar. These where awsome. They reminded me of the good old christmas sugar cookies my mom used to make. (even with the sugar subsitute). Will make these again. PS: I also got sugarfree icecream and made him icecream sandwiches with these cookies.

I made these cookies today with 2 of my girls and it was so simple! They are sooo yummmy this cookie will be made often believe me! We did add half a marichino cherry to the top of some and they came out so awesome!! Merry Christmas!
I have been making this recipe for 15 years since i found it on a box of butter one christmas when my kids were small...I change up the sugar colors and make them for all kinds of holidays...It is easy , delicious and a family favorite that gets many requests!
