A rich, hearty and simple bacon potato soup that is welcome at almost any occasion.
Cook bacon in 3-quart saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes; add potatoes and onions. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, 10-15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Add all remaining ingredients. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, 5-10 minutes or until heated through.
*Substitute 1 cup frozen corn, thawed.

This chowder is so delicious! Excellent as written. I have to make a double batch in my house! Just watch the potatoes when cooking them with bacon. You don't want them too soft or you will wind up with mashed potatoes! (Which is still delicious)
This is an easy to make, delicious chowder that will please nearly everyone!
I made this with cheddar soup and I've made this with onion soup. Both add wonderful flavor. I only add 1 cup of milk to make it really stick to your ribs. I use russet potatos upon occasion and never use onion when I'm using onion soup, it get overwhelming. This is a great chowder!! I mean, who doesn't love bacon!!
I'm with Tracy on this one. Cheddar cheese adds a rich buttery cheesy flavour.
A Family favorite. My boys (ages 10,10,9) ask for it as soon as the weather changes. I have given this recipe to several friends over the year. This year it is the opener for our Family Thanksgiving Dinner.

I have been making this for over 20 years. I had a book salesman come into my work and I couldn't resist buying it. it has been my kids favorite soup for as long as I have made it. And it is our Halloween night tradition....
I started making this over 10 years ago when I received a Land O' Lakes cookbook from a sales rep @ work . My family loves it and as a Midwesterner I have to admit that I make this about once a month during the winter months. Don't be afraid to use your frozen garden vegetables to change it up.
This is super fast and super tasty. Everyone I have served this to, has asked for the recipe.
This recipe has been a family favorite for years, but we only use one medium onion and precook the potatoes
Great recipe! This recipe tastes good with or without the sour cream. The bacon adds a nice subtle hint of flavor that takes chowder up a notch. Cooking time was a bit off for the potatoes. I doubled the recipe and cooked the potatoes with the bacon for about ten minutes. I then added all the other ingredients (minus the sour cream) and let it simmer for 1-2 hours. The potatoes came out perfect, not too soft but not crunchy either. It's a nice hearty, filling, and warm meal that is perfect for a cold fall or winter day.
I love this recipe an so do the kids! The potatoes took longer to cook then specified so I will be sure to parboil the potatoes first the next time I make it....which will be very soon!
I made several batches of this soup for a Sweetheart Tea fundraiser our local herb unit holds every year. I had many requests for the recipe. It is easy, since there is no need to peel the potatoes, and tastes great!
This is one of our all time favorite soup recipes. Quick to prepare and well loved. The only change I make besides doubling the recipe is using canned diced new potatoes. Nobody can tell the difference and it sure beats peeling and dicing taters. I would rate this 6 stars if I could!!
I made this recipe today. It is pretty simple and VERY tasty. REALLY REALLY good. I would only add one instruction to the recipe. I was unsure if the bacon grease went into the soup or not. I called a friend and they said, indeed it does. I may specify not to drain the bacon. If you haven't made a lot of soup, you might not be sure. This is an excellent taste combination. I added some cheddar cheese too.
Very Hearty and filling, excellent recipe for a cold day. I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and being a family of four it takes no time for us to devour the entire pot full, so make extra if you have older kids or more people!
I bought the land o lakes cook books over 20 years ago and this recipe was it it. My ex husband made it all the time. It has become my childrens favorite soup. Very hearty.
My family and friends love this receipe. I even made it for our football teams concession stand. I have some children that are very picky and always ask for me to make Corn Chowder. We have bought other corn chowders and had some in restuarants but nothing compares to the taste of this receipe. Thanks for making me seem like an excellant cook.
This recipe was so delicious, my family immediately said to "make it anytime". I suggest making a double recipe as it will definitely get eaten. The only change I would make is to add a bit less thyme as it is such a strong spice and you don't want to overpower the taste of the other ingredients to the thyme.

I have been making this for many, many years. It is AWESOME and I have never served it to anyone who did not LOVE it! I've had several requests to serve it for Thanksgiving, and will do just that (but long before the main meal, so as not to fill up so much). Don't change a thing (except use thick sliced bacon). Very sinful, but for once in a while, you can forgive yourself and just be "good" for a while afterwards! ENJOY!
One of my husband's favorite dinners I make. I only use half an onion, and sometimes I cover the potatoes with a lid to help them soften because it seems to take longer than the 10 to 15 minutes, but overall a wonderful recipe that we thoroughly enjoy.
This is a very good and easy recipe. I changed the sour cream to 1/2 cup instead of the 1 cup listed and it was still a very yummy soup/chowder. I also didn't cook the bacon in the same pan to avoid the greasy texture in it.
