Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

Old-fashioned apple crisp, warm from the oven, is a favorite comfort food dessert. Try this easy apple crisp recipe for a delicious ending to a fall family dinner.

6 medium (6 cups) apples, peeled, cored, sliced
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup uncooked old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream, if desired


Heat oven to 375°F.

Place apples into ungreased 8-inch square baking pan.

Combine brown sugar, oats, flour and cinnamon in bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples. Bake 25-35 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown.

Serve warm with ice cream, if desired.

This is an easy recipe and I used gluten free flour and it was yummy!
First time making apple crisp. I googled for a recipe and figured I couldn't go wrong with Land of Lakes. I used Cortland apples and light brown sugar the first batch, splenda brown sugar on my second batch the 2nd night. Both were equally grand.
Would Fuji apples hold up well in this recipe...family really likes the taste of Fujis

I wish they would specify light or dark brown sugar. Some of us our not regular bakers and want the exact recipe.

Hi Deb, you can use either light or dark brown sugar. The dark brown sugar will just have a slightly richer flavor. Happy baking!

Made this last night exactly as directed and it turned out great!!! Best apple crisp I've ever made. My husband and two teen-aged kids loved it, as did I.

I was worried that without added flour, cornstarch, or tapioca to the apples, it would be watery, but it wasn't - it set up perfectly and was ready to eat (with vanilla ice cream on top!) 5 minutes after coming out of the oven. I baked it for 35 minutes to be sure the apples would be soft enough, and they were (without being mushy).

I think the type of apples used make a big difference. I used 2 granny smith apples, 2 McIntosh apples, and 2 honey crisp apples - all of which are recommended for any baked apple dish. They held their shape and have great flavor and texture when baked.

The topping was perfect - not too crispy and not too mushy. Sweet (nice balance to the tartness of the apples) and "oatmealy." It was just right.

A classic, comforting, and easy-to-make apple crisp.

can someone tell me the difference between an Apple Crisp, Apple Cobbler, and Apple Crumble which is an English version and my favorite - the recipes all appear to be the same thing to me....

This recipe is amazing! I would'nt change a thing, This is a keeper. It's so easy to put together and the smells from my kitchen ahhh!
I used 1/2 tsp of cinnamon and 1/2 tsp of
traditional apple pie spice which is typically
a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and cloves.
I only had Jonamac apples. I sprinkled them with lemon juice so they would have a more tart flavor. The result was excellent. The best crisp I have made.
I've tried a variety of Apple Crisp recipes to get just the right one, and this is one of my very favorites!
Used this recipe for an "Apple Bakeoff" - won 1st place for the second year in a row - it was DELICIOUS!

I've made this several times and it is an excellent crisp.
This is a well loved recipe in my family. I always make this after our apple picking outings. Using a pastry cutter and local crisp apples makes a perfect crisp every time. Can be doubled.
