Bacon Onion Cheeseburger with fries

Bring on the Sunshine and Break Out the Grill for Bacon Onion Cheeseburgers

I am a lucky girl that my grill master husband is willing to brave all kinds of nasty weather in order to sear our meat for us. Nothing, however, is quite like grilling in the summertime! The balmy weather, the casual atmosphere as you chat with friends on the patio, the smell of your dinner cooking—mmm! It all comes together to make some of our best meal experiences.

And, since we moved into our home at the end of last summer, we have been itching for the chance to bust out the tongs and get in some springtime grilling at our new place! But you can’t kick off grilling season with just any old thing: it needs to introduce the essence of summer. Burgers anyone? That’s what I thought.

So, we decided to give this new Bacon Onion Cheeseburger recipe a try. It’s easy to prep and everything is made on the grill at once. Perfect!

Start by warming up that grill to medium heat (or if you are using a charcoal grill until coals are ash white) and shaping the ground beef into patties. Then, grab a pan for your bacon and onions. You can use a disposable aluminum pan if you’re going to grill out at a park or if you just want to keep clean up easy. Since we were home, we used a small pan we had on hand.

Cut the bacon slices into thirds and lay them on the bottom of the pan.

Ingredients

Top the bacon with the sliced onion and the small butter pieces.

Onions over Bacon

Place the pan on one side of the grill. Turn the bacon pieces occasionally so they crisp up and the onions get the chance to cook to a golden brown. This will take about 15 minutes.

Now add your hamburger patties to the other side of the grill. Grill the burgers, turning once, for about 15 more minutes.

Grilling Burgers

When the burgers are just about done, top each patty with two slices of Land O Lakes® Deli American. Allow a minute for the cheese to melt. Place the sliced pretzel buns, face down, on the grill. Give them just a minute to toast (but keep an eye on them! (Mine got a little crispier than I intended).

Grilling Buns

Remove the buns, burgers and pan of bacon and onions from the grill and prepare to serve.

Slather a little honey mustard onto the cut sides of the pretzel buns, then load them up with a cheeseburger and the bacon-onion mixture. Serve with fries and other summer fare, like a green salad, corn on the cob or fruit.

Final Burger

Then it’s time to dig in and celebrate summer! (Notice Ryan’s shirt. Now you know why summer is so precious to us—we don’t get much of it in Minnesota!)

Man with Burger

Prepare Bacon Onion Cheeseburgers for your next picnic, party or casual summer evening. Then rate the recipe. It’s everyone’s favorite! How can you go wrong?
