Everyone’s first thought for a sports party is savory appetizers – but let’s not forget about the best part of a meal…dessert! Whether you’re feeding hungry kids or hungry friends, a sweet treat is always a welcome addition to your tailgating spread.

I’ve created three unique decorated desserts –two cupcakes and a cake for you to create or use as inspiration for your party.

Football Cupcakes

Whatever you prefer, either chocolate or vanilla cake is the perfect base for these cupcakes. Use chocolate frosting and a medium-sized star tip to pipe a rough shape of a football. Then use a small round tip to pipe the laces.

Football Field Cupcakes

Use chocolate cupcakes or vanilla cupcakes for the base. Tint about 1 cup of vanilla buttercream frosting green, then frost a rectangle down the middle of the cupcake. Then use white frosting to cover the two exposed edges and sprinkle with rainbow nonpareils to mimic the stadium crowd. A small round tip can be used for the field markings. If you want to go one step further, use yellow candy melts to pipe mini goal posts onto wax paper. Let set in the freezer for about 30 minutes, and then insert into the cupcake! How cute is that?

Football Cake

Here’s an easy way to make a football-shaped cake without a special pan! Bake your favorite chocolate cake in a round cake pan. Depending on your recipe, you could end up with enough batter for two rounds. Just make one and use the rest of the batter for cupcakes.

Once the cake is completely cooled, cut out a 2-inch strip in the middle of the cake and remove it.

Push the two halves together…

…and cover in chocolate frosting. Use a little bit of white frosting for the laces. I used some green tinted frosting and a star tip to create grass around the edge.

As I was creating these desserts, I realized they would be great not only for big game get-togethers, but perfect for sports-themed birthday parties or end-of-the-season banquets!

What do you like to serve for dessert when getting friends together to enjoy the big game? I’d love to hear your ideas!
