Football + Super Bowl + Party + BBQ Football Pizza = Smiles

Football + Super Bowl + Party + BBQ Football Pizza = Smiles

I love football.  My son Kyle is a senior in college this year and just completed his last season playing on the football team. I can’t resist bragging just a little!  Kyle played left tackle on the offensive line for Bethel University (Go Royals!).  They made it to the semi-finals in the NCAA Division III Championship this fall.  It was soooooo much fun!  Here is a picture of Kyle in action; he’s #61.

My football passion extends beyond my son.  I am a Minnesota Viking fan as well.  Now I know we didn’t have the best season, but there is always next year.  Even though my team won’t be playing in the Super Bowl, I always gather with my friends at our annual Super Bowl party.  This year I am bringing a fun recipe, BBQ Football Pizza.  It meets all my criteria:  Quick, easy, fun and most importantly, tasty!  And, there is a bonus – it looks like a football!  How fun is that?  My plan is to have it all put together and ready to go into the oven.  I will bring it to the party, pop it into the oven and about 20 minutes later it will be ready to serve.

One of the ingredients in BBQ Football Pizza is frozen bread dough.  This dough makes a simple pizza crust with little effort.  The one thing you must remember to do is thaw the dough.  I usually take it out of the freezer the day before I need it and let it thaw in the refrigerator.  So, don’t forget this important step.  Here are all the ingredients ready to go.  There are only four ingredients in this easy recipe- barbecue sauce, deli roast beef, thawed frozen bread dough, and provolone cheese.

Heat the oven to 375º F.  If you are bringing this to a party like I am, call the host ahead and ask her to have her oven on and ready for when you arrive.  Start by coarsely chopping the deli roast beef.

Then, cut the cheese slices in half.

In a 10-inch skillet, place the barbecue sauce and roast beef.  Cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through and the barbecue sauce is absorbed.

While the roast beef is cooking begin prepping the crust.  Place the thawed bread dough on a large greased baking sheet.  Form it into a 16x10x1/4-inch football-shape.  I found it easiest to work with the dough if I greased my hands with a little butter.

Just keep working with the dough to form a football shape.

A ruler helps determine if you have the correct size.

Voila!  A football made from dough.  Trust me it really will look like a football.

Poke the dough several times (or more) with a fork.  This allows air to escape so the bread dough doesn’t form large air pockets and puff up as it bakes.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until the dough is lightly browned.  Here’s where I plan to stop the prep and pack up the ingredients to bring to the party.  I will assemble and finish baking once I arrive.

To assemble the pizza, top the baked crust with the barbecued beef mixture.  If your beef mixture is cold, warm it up a minute or two in the microwave before topping the crust.  This ensures the pizza will be heated through after baking.

Layer cheese slices on top of the beef.  Feel free to overlap the slices as needed.

Bake the pizza for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted.  Some of the cheese may bubble and brown a little.  Once the pizza is removed from the oven let it stand 5 minutes.

I garnished my pizza with some strips of green onion to make the lacing on the football.

Feel free to add your favorite toppings before you add the cheese.  Some ideas include sliced black olives, chopped onion, chopped green pepper, etc.  The perfect pizza for a Super Bowl Party!  Let me know how your football pizza turns out and remember to come back to rate and review the recipe.

Come back in a few days when Liz shows how-to-make a sweet bite-sized chocolate treat.
