Cheese-Stuffed Pretzel Buns – Who Could Ask for More?

One of my fondest memories from my childhood was going to my grandparents’ house after school. My grandpa loved to eat (that must be where I get my love of food), and he would always have a snack waiting for me.


One of my favorite snacks that he would make was a slice of extra-sharp cheddar cheese on a piece of my grandma’s freshly-baked bread. I love bread. I love cheese. I love anything that combines the two. So it would probably make sense that I could not get enough of these Cheese-Stuffed Pretzel Buns the first time I tried them. They brought back memories of my favorite after-school snack, and I think I’ll definitely be adding these to my rotation of after-work snacks!


They’re fairly simple to make, and you can even make them ahead and freeze them so they’re at the ready when you want one for a quick snack. Here’s how:


First, let the frozen rolls thaw on a cookie sheet sprayed with no-stick cooking spray. You’ll know they’re ready when the rolls feel soft.


Thaw Frozen Rolls


The cheesy center is fairly simple to make – just cut a piece of Sharp Cheddar American Blend into quarters…

Stack two quarters…

Fold in half…


Fold Cheese in Half


And fold in half again.

This will form a small “cube”.

Press the cube of Sharp Cheddar American Blend into the center of a roll…

…and seal edges tightly.

Once each roll is stuffed, place them onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and let stand for 15 minutes.


Now the fun part…boiling the rolls. This will give them the bubbled surface like a pretzel.

Bring water to a boil in a large saucepan and add the baking soda and sugar. (This is what helps give the rolls their “pretzel-like” appearance.)

Place four rolls in the boiling water at a time…

…and turn once until the surface is lightly bubbled.


Flip Rolls


Repeat with remaining rolls, placing them back on lined baking sheet. Brush each roll with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.


Add Egg Wash to Buns


Bake 14-16 minutes at 425°F or until golden brown.

Try not to eat at least three of these in a sitting. It’s not possible. I can’t get enough!

Hi. I've read the recipe through a couple of times- they sound heavenly. My question is...are the rolls rolls or are they uncooked dough? I know- sounds like a dumb question, but I want to make sure?

HI Pam, the rolls you start with should be thawed, raw dinner roll dough. Hope this helps!
