What could be more enticing than a beautiful tray of homemade cookies? Whether you are arranging one for a party or as a gift, design a memorable display by following these simple tips:
- Start with a pretty platter or tray. Although platters and trays with rims will work, a flat surface works best for arranging. Look through your cabinets for inspiration; use a silver service tray from your grandmother, a framed mirror, the large Thanksgiving platter or a cake pedestal.
- Line the tray or platter with colorful paper or doilies.
- Choose a variety of cookies. Be sure to include different flavors, shapes, colors and textures.
- Cut bars evenly for best appearance.
- Select cookies with assorted toppings, such as powdered sugar, drizzle, nuts or colorful decorator sugar.
- Consider the crowd: Will there be kids? Include sweets that would satisfy them. Is it a more formal occasion? For casual gatherings, include a mix of classics and new delights.
- Place small pieces of bar cookies, small cookies or candies in decorative miniature cupcake or candy liners.
- Vary the height and stack some cookies, or use a tiered plate for extra visual interest.
- Include a small dish with candied nuts or other bite-size candies if space allows. Choose an interesting bowl with a great color or unusual shape.
- If giving the tray as a hostess gift, cover it using seasonal printed or colored plastic wrap. Use enough wrap so that it may be gathered in the center and tied with a bow.
- Assemble the tray just before serving so the cookies are fresh.
