Creating New Holiday Traditions

Every once in a while, you enter into a completely new stage of life where the rules change and it’s time to create a new normal. I was recently lucky enough to marry my best friend, and, now that all of the craziness of wedding planning, putting gifts away in our tiny apartment and changing my name (no one ever mentions how ridiculous that is!) is over, we’re starting to get into the swing of everyday life.

With the holiday season fast approaching, we’re both looking forward to keeping some of the traditions we grew up with, but also creating some new ones.

First up in the holiday season is Thanksgiving, and, luckily, we already have a tradition for this! A couple of years ago, my husband had to work the day after Thanksgiving, which made it difficult to travel to see either of our families on Thursday. Our solution? We made our own dinner for two! We loved it so much, we’ve done it every year since then, even when we do travel.

We reserve the next weekend to cook all the sides we love, like Bread Sage Stuffing, Home Style Mashed Potatoes and Green Bean Almond Bake, and we have a second Thanksgiving meal. It’s also a great way to ensure we have leftovers (not always a guarantee when at our parents’ homes)!

During the holidays, one of us really loves egg nog (not me – it’s a texture thing) so, to please us both, I’m going to make these Eggnog Snowflakes. The flavors we both love and eggnog in cookie form. Everyone wins!

My husband’s family actually cuts down a tree every year, which is new to me. We always had a real one, but we’d buy it precut. Now we go out in the woods and choose the perfect tree! I look forward to bringing it home and decorating every year. It’s the first time we’ll listen to holiday music, and, of course, have a warm drink. This year we’ll try Peppermint White Hot Chocolate. I’m almost dreaming of snow….almost.
