Ingredients

2 cups water

1 cup whole milk

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup uncooked grits

1/2 cup Land O Lakes® Butter

2 ounces (1/2 cup) Land O Lakes® Sharp White Cheddar Farmstyle Cut Shredded Cheese

How to make

  1. STEP 1

    Combine water, milk and salt in medium saucepan. Cover; bring to a boil over medium heat. Whisk in grits. Cook, stirring over slow boil and adjusting heat as needed, 5 minutes or until mixture thickens.

  2. STEP 2

    Remove from heat; stir in butter and cheese. Cover; let stand 5 minutes before serving.

  3. STEP 3

    Refrigerate any leftovers in covered container up to 3 days.

Tip #1

New to grits? Cornmeal or dried polenta are great stand-ins for traditional grits.

Tip #2

These grits make a hearty base for a favorite chili or thick stew.  

Tip #3

For another spin on this Southern staple, pour any leftover grits into a glass baking dish. Cover and refrigerate. Cut chilled grits into squares, then pan-fry in butter to serve with eggs and bacon the next morning.
