Learn How it Works...
Frosting
6 tablespoons Land O Lakes® Butter, softened
3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
1 (1-ounce) square unsweetened baking chocolate, melted, cooled slightly
2 cups powdered sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Caterpillar
36 round salted butter crackers
1 large nonpareil
14 gumdrop candies
65 to 70 candy-coated pastel licorice candies
Licorice strings or twists, cut as desired
STEP 1
Combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate in bowl. Beat at medium speed until creamy. Add powdered sugar; beat at low speed until well mixed. Increase speed to high; continue beating, adding enough milk for desired spreading consistency. (Frosting should not be too thin.)
STEP 2
Work with 1 cracker at a time on a 14x10-inch or large serving tray. Frost 1 side of cracker; press frosted side onto unfrosted side of another cracker. Hold crackers upright while assembling. Continue with remaining crackers and frosting to form curved caterpillar.
STEP 3
Attach nonpareil for head and gumdrop candies for eyes and back bumps, using frosting. Create legs by pushing candy-coated licorice pieces in between crackers towards bottom. Use licorice strings to make antennas.
STEP 4
Cover tightly until serving time.
- This caterpillar is best served the day it is prepared so that the crackers stay crisp and frosting stays creamy.
- A 15x10x1-inch baking pan can be substituted for a serving tray. Cover with aluminum foil or decorative paper.
