Ricotta Mixture

1 cup ricotta cheese

2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves

2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley

1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

Meat Sauce

1 pound ground beef, pork and veal mixture  

2 teaspoons crushed fennel seeds

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 (24-ounce) jar marinara pasta sauce


1 (12-inch) loaf ciabatta bread, cut in half lengthwise

12 (3/4-ounce) slices Land O Lakes® 4 Cheese Italian Blend


 *Substitute lean ground beef or ground turkey.

How to make

  1. STEP 1

    Heat oven to 400°F.

  2. STEP 2

    Combine all ricotta mixture ingredients in bowl. Set aside.

  3. STEP 3

    Place all meat sauce ingredients except pasta sauce in 12-inch skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 8-10 minutes or until meat is browned. Drain. Add pasta sauce; cook over low heat 15 minutes.

  4. STEP 4

    Place bread halves, cut-side up, onto large ungreased baking pan. Spread meat sauce evenly over bread halves. Top each with 4 slices cheese and dollops of ricotta mixture. Cut remaining 4 slices cheese in half diagonally; lay over edges of bread.

  5. STEP 5

    Bake 10-12 minutes or until cheese is melted.
