Ingredients

1 pound
Italian sausage
1 medium (1/2 cup)
green bell pepper, chopped
1 small (1/2 cup)
onion, chopped
1/4 cup
ketchup
1 (14.5-ounce) can
diced tomatoes with basil, garlic & oregano*, drained
1 teaspoon
Italian seasoning, *
1/4 cup
Land O Lakes® Butter, melted
1/4 teaspoon
garlic powder
4
French rolls or hoagie buns or hamburger buns, split
4 ounces (1 cup)
shredded mozzarella cheese
 
*Substitute 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes and 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning.

Directions

  1. Combine sausage, green pepper and onion in 10-inch skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sausage is browned (10 to 15 minutes); drain off fat. Stir in ketchup, tomatoes and Italian seasoning. Increase heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens (5 to 7 minutes).
  2. Heat broiler. Stir together butter and garlic powder in small bowl; brush on split rolls. Place rolls, cut-side up, onto ungreased baking sheet. Place 1/4 sausage mixture on bottom half of each roll; top with cheese.
  3. Broil 3 to 5 inches from heat until cheese is melted (2 to 3 minutes). Place top half of each roll over bottom half.

Recipe Tips

To make ahead prepare and cook beef mixture ahead of time. Heat broiler at serving time. Continue as directed above.
