Ingredients

Custard

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 1/2 cups milk

1 1/2 cups Land O Lakes® Buttercream Style Half & Half

3 large Land O Lakes® Eggs (yolks only)

1 tablespoon Land O Lakes® Butter

2 teaspoons French vanilla flavoring blend

Garnish

Fresh berries, if desired

Mint leaves, if desired

 *Substitute 2 teaspoons vanilla

How to make

  1. STEP 1

Combine cornstarch and brown sugar in heavy 2-quart saucepan; stir until well mixed. Add milk and half & half; stir until well mixed.

  2. STEP 2

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly and scraping bottom of pan, 12-14 minutes or until mixture thickens and begins to boil. Remove from heat.

  3. STEP 3

Beat egg yolks in bowl. Very slowly pour 1 1/2 cups hot milk mixture into egg yolks, whisking constantly. Slowly pour egg mixture back into hot milk mixture in saucepan, whisking constantly.

  4. STEP 4

Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, 2-3 minutes or until mixture thickens and begins to boil. Immediately, remove from heat. Stir in butter and French vanilla flavoring blend.

  5. STEP 5

Divide custard among 6 individual serving dishes. Cover; refrigerate at least 30 minutes or until serving time. Garnish with fresh berries and mint leaves, if desired.

Tip #1

It is important to slowly add the hot milk mixture to egg yolks and stir constantly to prevent eggs from curdling.

Love this recipe. Figured since I make it again and again so I'd better give it a rating. I gave 4 stars because I changed the ingredients (all lowfat milk, an extra yolk b/c my chickens make medium eggs, occasionally a little less sugar). If I'd followed them exactly and liked it five would be the number. One of my little boys considers this heaven. This recipe must be good or altering and ruining it like I do wouldn't yield such incredible results. So creamy, so sweet, so rich and so incredibly yellow yet not too awful for picky little two year olds.
