1 pound Italian sausage

1 medium (1/2 cup) green bell pepper, chopped

1 small (1/2 cup) onion, chopped

1/4 cup ketchup

1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic & oregano,   drained

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning  

1/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, melted

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

4 French rolls or hoagie buns or hamburger buns, split

4 ounces (1 cup) shredded mozzarella cheese

 *Substitute 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes and 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning.

How to make

  1. STEP 1

    Combine sausage, green pepper and onion in 10-inch skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sausage is browned (10 to 15 minutes); drain off fat. Stir in ketchup, tomatoes and Italian seasoning. Increase heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens (5 to 7 minutes).

  2. STEP 2

    Heat broiler. Stir together butter and garlic powder in small bowl; brush on split rolls. Place rolls, cut-side up, onto ungreased baking sheet. Place 1/4 sausage mixture on bottom half of each roll; top with cheese.

  3. STEP 3

    Broil 3 to 5 inches from heat until cheese is melted (2 to 3 minutes). Place top half of each roll over bottom half.

Tip #1

To make ahead prepare and cook beef mixture ahead of time. Heat broiler at serving time. Continue as directed above.
