Double Chocolate Spiced Cookies

Black pepper, usually associated with savory foods, is a fun addition in this chocolate cookie.

20 min
3 hrs

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa

1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 1/4 cups powdered sugar

3/4 cup Land O Lakes® Unsalted Butter, softened

1 large Land O Lakes® Egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 teaspoons shortening

Decorator sprinkles, if desired

How to make

  1. STEP 1

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, pepper, salt and cinnamon in bowl. Set aside.

  2. STEP 2

Place powdered sugar and butter in another bowl; beat at medium speed until creamy. Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until well mixed. Add flour mixture; beat at low speed until well mixed.

  3. STEP 3

Divide dough in half. Shape each half into ball; flatten slightly. Wrap each in plastic food wrap. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or until firm.

  4. STEP 4

    Heat oven to 375ºF.

  5. STEP 5

Roll out dough, one ball at a time (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), on lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with 2-inch round cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 7-8 minutes or until set. Cool completely.

  6. STEP 6

Combine chocolate chips and shortening in bowl. Microwave 30 seconds; stir. Continue microwaving, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth.

  7. STEP 7

Glaze cookies; top with sprinkles, if desired. Let stand until glaze is set.

I think the sprinkles "make" this cookie! Where would I be able to buy them?

I would suggest you shop at a cake decorating store or shop online. There are a number of cake decorating web sites that will have these sprinkles.

Lovely cookie, I subbed 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp cloves and 1/4 tsp nutmeg for the pepper. Not a pepper fan!
