Ingredients

1 cup sugar

3/4 cup Land O Lakes® Butter, softened

1 large Land O Lakes® Egg

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate, melted

How to make

  1. STEP 1

    Heat oven to 375°F.

  2. STEP 2

Combine sugar, butter, egg and vanilla in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Add flour, baking powder and salt; beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed.

  3. STEP 3

Divide dough in half. Place half of dough into another bowl; stir in chocolate until well mixed.

  4. STEP 4

Shape each teddy bear using either vanilla or chocolate dough or a combination for two-toned teddy bears. Shape 1 large (1-inch) ball for body. Place onto ungreased cookie sheet; flatten slightly. Shape 1 medium (3/4-inch) ball for head, 4 small (1/2-inch) balls for arms and legs, 2 smaller balls for ears. Attach head, arms, legs and ears by overlapping slightly onto body. Add small balls for eyes, nose and mouth, if desired. Use fork to make claws on paws.

  5. STEP 5

Bake 7-8 minutes or until body is set. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely.

I made these bear cookies for a teddy bear tea party. The cuteness of the Bears were a hit but my cookies were kind of leaden because they weren't fully baked.....the ones I baked only for 7-8minutes following the recipe. The ones I baked for about 15 min were much lighter and crispier but also turned out a little too browned around the edges. Will need to try again and experiment with the baking time...to see if they turn out less tubby.

I tried this recipe, 20+ years ago, I think. Just when the Land O Lakes magazine included it and I offered them in a Bear Protection Association's party. Everybody liked them so much, for their taste and their look! Since then, I make them very often. I adore this recipe!

These have become my annual holiday sugar cookie. They are tender, flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. I make all vanilla dough and roll out for cookie cutters.

Great recipe!! Thank you I just did it with my 5 y.o twin nieces. They had a great fun to do it and eat it. We added some tiny smarties to do the eyes and belly button. (I didn't have bakes chocolate, so i replace with cacao powder)

I missed the comment about overlapping the appendages slightly over the body. My little pieces fell off because they weren't overlapped. The cookie tastes good. It's like a soft butter cookie.
