Ingredients

Caramelized Onion

1 tablespoon
Land O Lakes® Butter
2 large (4 cups)
yellow onions, sliced
1 teaspoon
finely chopped fresh thyme leaves*
1 teaspoon
white wine vinegar
1/4 teaspoon
coarse ground pepper
1/8 teaspoon
salt

Burger

1 1/2 pounds
lean ground beef
2 tablespoons
stone-ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon
salt
2 teaspoons
coarse ground pepper

Directions

  1. Melt butter in 12-inch skillet until sizzling; add onions. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 35-40 minutesuntil onions are tender and deep golden brown.
  2. Stir in thyme, vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes or until onions are caramelized.
  3. Heat gas grill on medium or charcoal grill until coals are ash white.
  4. Combine ground beef, mustard and salt in bowl; mix lightly. Shape into 4 (3/4-inch thick) patties. Sprinkle both sides of patties with pepper.
  5. Place patties onto grill. Grill, turning once, 10-12 minutes or until internal temperature reaches at least 160°F or until desired doneness.
  6. Grill hamburger buns until toasted. Fill buns with hamburgers; top each with 1/4 cup onion mixture.

Recipe Tips

Broiling Directions: Prepare onions and patties as directed above. Heat broiler. Place patties onto broiler pan. Broil, turning once, 12-15 minutes or until internal temperature reaches at least 160°F or until desired doneness.

This is the best burger I've ever tasted. Didn't need anything else on the burger. Awesome! I'm going to try other recipes in the LandOLakes website to see if they are good as this one.

This recipe is so simple to do, and the taste is wonderful. The stone-ground mustard works very well, and really compliments the flavors of the carmelized onions. I don't have a grill, so I just did them in a saute` pan. I did add a slice of pepperjack cheese to mine, and I think I now have a replacement for my favorite pattymelt! I made them smaller because of my diet restrictions, and they reheat very well, too. This one is a real winner and will go into my personal cookbook.
