Cute Lamb Cupcakes Perfect for Easter

A simple technique creates one of our most popular recipes! Here are step-by-step instructions for how to create these cute lamb cupcakes and avoid a Pinterest-fail.

Even though we created this recipe a few years ago, it’s still one our most popular. There is just something about cute animals in food-form that makes people swoon. This decorating technique is simple and results in some incredibly adorable spring cupcakes.

 

Making the Lamb Cupcake Batter and Frosting:

The cupcake batter and frosting are very straight-forward. For the batter, we start with a box of white cake mix and adjust the recipe on the package to fit our needs for this recipe (a test kitchen secret for when you need to bake in a hurry).  We add orange zest and juice to the cupcake batter, which brings a refreshing taste of citrus to them. Perfect for spring! 

The frosting is another great test kitchen secret. To achieve its sweet marshmallow flavor, we added marshmallow fluff. The frosting can get soft if you let it sit out for too long, so if you plan to make this recipe ahead of time, we suggest placing the frosting in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. 

Decorating the Lamb Cupcakes:

Decorating these cupcakes is the most important part. Before frosting the cupcakes, we suggest you start by making the lambs’ faces. Use the palm of your hand to flatten gumdrops to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a toothpick, poke holes into gumdrops for nostrils. Attach candy eyes and licorice pieces for ears, using frosting to adhere.


After you’ve made the lamb faces, it’s time to frost the cupcakes. Create a mound of frosting in center of each cupcake. If you have a cookie scoop, now is the perfect time to use it. Each cupcake will need about 3 tablespoons of frosting.

Assembly of Lamb Cupcakes:

To assemble cupcakes, attach 1 lamb face on the front 1/3 of each cupcake. Then, place miniature marshmallows onto cupcakes, pressing into frosting to adhere. Attach licorice pieces or licorice nibs for tails.


Storing them in the fridge will help everything stay in place.


We thought it would be fun to make a black sheep! Use the exact same technique for the face, but use a white gumdrop instead of a black one and then use chocolate chips instead of marshmallows for the body.
