Whether you’re planning a casual gathering or a more formal celebration, you can expect a fair amount of work. But with smart planning and a few simple tips, you can save yourself extra stress and ensure the event happens without a hitch.
- Review the recipes you plan to serve and decide which ones can be made ahead of time—only choosing one or two that require last minute preparation. This will save you time and stress on the day of the party.
- Write a to-do list for the entire week including essential duties like housecleaning, grocery shopping, decorating your home and preparing make-ahead dishes. Getting your home ready ahead of time will allow you the time needed to make final touches the day of the party.
- Delegate. Ask your spouse, friend or neighbor to be in charge of certain simple elements of the party.
- Make good use of local bakeries, delis or specialty food shops to round out your menu.
- Check your dishes and serving pieces; make sure you have enough and your dishes are the right size.
- When making food on the day of the party, be sure to clean as you go. Ask someone to help with dishes as you prepare the last couple of appetizers. Guests are always willing to help so don’t be afraid to ask.
- Above all, relax and enjoy the party.
